It takes some sacrifices (extra layers of clothing) in the colder months !
We have a newborn so the heater is always on in the nursery, heat pump cranks on full at the start of the free hour then I reduce it to the low 20's till we go to sleep
Hot water use is also adding to it, I had a look at the meter before and we were doing ~3.5 kWh and turned the hot water cylinder off and it dropped to ~1.2 kWh -_-
People have outlined how I think the power metering should work. Power used 5am to 5:30am should be reported at 5:30am - at least that's how it was done with Flick.
I emailed EK on the weekend and got an automatic reply. I didn't hear from them today, but this is probably a complex issue with quite a bit of analysis required. If I don't hear from them in a week I'll follow up. For now setting my free hour a half hour later than I use the power is working fine. 8.5kwh this morning, and I'm playing it safe so I don't blow another pole fuse.

No, I don't think so, or at least there isn't enough evidence to say either way. I think EK will have to work this one out. I could be something completely random, customer specific, it could relate to a specific computer that a customer is assigned to that has a clock out of sync, etc. My best guess is there's an error with a data analysis or processing algorithm.

So you're saying that if I crank everything on at 9am I will see the peak at 9:30am instead? Following that logic, if I crank everything on at 8:30 am then I'd see the peak start at 9am which means I'd effectively be cheating the system wouldn't I?
Usage is grouped into 30 minute blocks. On the graph the usage is shown for the previous 30 minutes. So usage between 0900 and 0930 will show on the graph at 0930. Any power you use at 0830 will show at the 0900 point. So for the hour of power you will be billed for the 0930 and 1000 point assuming you have the hour of power set at 0900-1000. So no you can't cheat the system.
On a side note, since moving last week we are sitting at about 14.2% savings during our hour of power. Managed just shy of 10kwh on Friday. My wife has got the fever and has pulled out all our old inefficient electric heaters which she cranks up around the house during our hour.

Be a bit careful with that, you could blow a pole fuse which can take hours to get fixed, maybe even the next day. My pole fuse is 60A, which isn't difficult to get to with heat pumps (10A, may have multiple), hot water (13A), dishwasher (10A peak), clothes drier (10A), any oil heaters, fridge, etc.
Can someone please give me the TLDR down-low on this potential incorrect plotting of the "free hour"? Is it potentially an issue, or just the way the data is recorded on their graphing? Thanks!

If it happens it happens. We've run out of things to turn on so I doubt we'll be able to exceed 10kwh. Everything important in the house is protected, the in laws are 5 minutes away and have a spare cot so worse case scenario we pack up and spend the night elsewhere.
We're sitting at 11.7% for the hour of power for the 6 days of usage recorded so far. Trying to keep our usage normal to see how EK is compared to Flick, plus I see little use in turning on every appliance in the house, besides a little novelty value. On Flick we'd run the dryer and a heater at 5am so we've stuck with doing that.
It's still early days but breaking it down to cents per unit we're on par with what we were paying for Flick around the end of April/beginning of May this year. The advantage now is we don't have to think about when power is cheapest, when it's off-peak, etc. We just use power when we want to.

Thanks for the explanation! I can't see the fine detail of my usage on my phone so will need to check it out on another device to see whether I may be affected in the same way, but given that EK are reporting I'm averaging a 17.9% saving for my free hour I doubt that it would be possible without the full hour being accounted for appropriately.
EK have replied that they're looking into the discrepancy between usage and metering, including talking to the metering company, but that it might take a few days to sort out. Their initial impression is that it's an isolated fault.

If you previously had the unable to connect to Electric Kiwi at the moment message trying to move from Flick, you may like to try again. I had this message when I checked the price previously, however, could currently move if I wanted to (Wellington Area).
I won't be moving as I am still on the day / night plan so will ride out the current prices as would still be better off overall taking into account the lower off peak power over a longer timeframe. It's a very close call for me at the moment however, once the prices come down, will be much better off with Flick (only due to the day night plans).
