Oh, and CFL's radiation patterns are better in some fittings than LED, like outdoor bulkhead lights where the LED shines it all to one end and it looks naff. I did try some side illuminating LEDs off ebay but they were total craptastic stuff. In winter the CFLs really suffer outside with warmup tho, so LED would be ideal if they didnt only light up one end of the glass.

Yeah good point although have been fairly impressed with the spread of the Philips units. Still a long way off a incandescent but a lot better then some.

LED Panel lights solve that problem.

The problem is they appear to be cheap chinese ones, so you don't know how safe or reliable they are. Nor how well they work. Often buying cheap is false economy.

Nety: There is one from July 2012 but still woefully out of date, cannot see any newer updates, agree cannot see any reason to still recommend CFL other then light outputs that LED is just not producing yet in the form factors used.

Cost is probably the only reason to still go for CFL, as you can sometime get philips U shapped ones for $2 per bulb in a 5 pack, and they don't use much more power than LED.
I have found that the philips LEDs do get very hot on the white base. There must be a lot of room to make them more efficient, as a lot of energy must still be getting lost in heat.

Not really, the ends of the tube have to be heated to get the current to flow thru the gas. That is why the efficiancy on the small CFL's is so lousy - still the same electrodes to heat for a stupid little tube.

I was going on the energy ratings on the  box of philips LED vs Philips CFL, and they often use the identical amount of power to create the equivalent light

eg a 40 watt incandescent is 8W for a spiral CFL, and 8 W for an LED. So they use the same amount of power. But the price difference when buying a LED vs a CFL is $20 vs $2-5. Although LED should last longer. Although I noticed that philips LED are only rated to last 25000 hours, while other LEDs are often quoted to last 50000 hours.

The philips LCDs do seem to get hotter than CFLs. I don't think the philips LED ones are as efficient as they will be in the future.

The ratings on CFLs are totally bogus in most cases, I have some "23" watt ones that suck down close to 30 on the watt meter. Still dont compete with a 150W incan which they are supposed to equal either.

Many probably are, although I would have thought that philips ones would be fairly accurate, as their brand depends on it. Both are rated at around 500 lumins, although CFLs lose their strength over time.

It would be incredibly harsh light, tiny light sources and no diffusing at all.

Multiple light sources makes for horrible 3d looking shadows which are very nausia inducing. Looks like there is room for an actual driver so hopefully they are not a 100Hz flickerfest like some others with a similar design. the flicker is worse on a small light source as you will see it everytime you move your gaze around.

Philips 8 w ones from bunnings are cheaper, only $19, and they are a top brand and they produce good quality light. Don't know why people would go for a non brand at that price.

I would only consider it because they are local with a 5 year warranty, and the range of LED lights from Electrical Direct appears to be half decent quality (or at least the photos look okay).

Has anyone tried the LED lights from the Warehouse?
