Just back from a service. Was told the reason the 4G is not working is because the SIM card is from Telstra and that is not working now and BYD is trying to source a NZ carrier SIM. If I knew where to put it I would put my own SIM in.

Interestingly, Teslas have been having real problems with mobile connection the last few months - I've typically been getting download speeds of around 0.2MB! Teslas also come with Telstra SIMs, roaming on Spark - luckily Tesla has finally taken the issue seriously and worked with Spark to improve speed (though I don't know how seriously they're looking to change to an NZ carrier - much easier for BYD while still only a relatively small number of cars on the roads.)

Just to ask the question again. Anybody know where the SIM card location is?

Keep seeing these around and really keen to take one for a spin if they get a dealer closer to Invercargill

Well they have a dealer shop in one of the malls in Dunedin.... Much to my surprise.

BYD mentioned here as one of the firms to watch, as they release 3 models into Europe.

Been seeing posts on the BYD forum on FB (as an aside I hate having to go there but that is where all the discussion is) and some of those who have the BYD and the V2L adapter are using it to power critical appliances when they have lost power due to the flooding.

Chalk up another use of the EV.

You can also charge during off peak low power price rate and then power the house during peak rates.

Wouldn't want to do it with non lfp but lfp should be ok right?

You can't power the whole house with the BYD. It's V2L not V2H, so it can only power one or two appliances at a time. Still very useful to keep critical appliances running when you have no power.

Some folks are running cables into the house and powering their refrigerators and their ONTs and TVs :-)

When the car battery is low, then go find a public charger that is still working, spend an hour there to refill and go back home. The refrigerator or freezer should last a couple of hours being without power.

From reading bits and pieces from the web, BYD V2L is only rated for about 2200W continuous load. And about 3000w peak

Certainly a V2L EV would be great for anyone suffering from a long term power outage (days).

Having some lights/TV and maybe internet would be pretty useful.

If you could run the freezer for a couple of hours to keep it frozen that would save a lot of food going off.

Wonder what the startup load is, on a modern fridge freezer?

I have often seen this type of comment:

  • Power surges on start-up can be 2 – 3 times the running power (higher for older freezers).

So if that was still true, the issue could be the startup surge is too high to get a fridge/freezer started.

Wonder if that is still true?
