How hard probably depends on make and model of vehicle and the type of part required. What make model are we talking about? 

 

I've not had issues getting parts from my 22 year old car.

 

Parts like alternators are generally off the shelf models which a manufacturer has used. You'll often find the same model alternator was/is used in a variety vehicles.

 

At a component level particularly parts that may need replacement during the life of the alternator, items like bearings, brushes, rectifiers etc, these parts are often parts that are common to other models of alternators as well. I'd be very surprised if there weren't parts available.

OEM = original equipment manufacture ie toyota or bosh etc.

 

 

This. So the OEM Toyota Hilux diesel pump is going to be a Bosch, not Toyota manufactured part. 

 

The funny part is identical parts from the same OEM manufacturer with different part numbers stamped for different manufacturer catalogs. An identical mass airflow sensor with a Nissan part number could be half the price of the one with the Mercedes part number.

My car is a 2006 (18-19 years old) - Never had an issue with parts.

yes, but what makes it more complicated is many parts are made under license by other firms. ie bosh part made by toyota or one of their contracted companies.

yes. even for different model alternators the internals are often the same or the same family. also these days many of those parts are available aftermarket. usually its not a big problem to swap out diode pack and replace the bearings and brushes.
