I'd be a little weary. But wouldn't say it's out of the question, as a precautionary measure to make sure you as a new customer you are who you say you are. So they don't have claw backs (as the owner of the card you're basically protected - but PITA if fraudulent transaction).

I guess it mostly comes down to if you trust them as a company or not. But it does seem to be unusual, I've never been personally asked.

It seems to be getting more common. A few months ago I got the following from Computer Lounge while ordering a router:

----

As you are purchasing for the first time with a credit card or debit card please verify ownership of the card by answering 1 of 3 options below. This is to make sure the transaction is yours and not being used without your authority.

OPTION 1: Confirm your place of employment by replying to this email with your company name and reception phone number. We won't talk to them about your purchase, only ask them if you are employed there.

or

OPTION 2: Call your bank and ask specifically for the 'authorisation code' for this transaction (it is a 6 digit code), then send your answer by replying to this email.

or

OPTION 3: Check your on-line bank statement and look for a unique reference code (CL-_ _ _ _ _ _). This is information we have added to the transaction which will read CL-_ _ _ _ _ _ followed by your purchase amount. Send your answer by replying to this email. Note: The credit card transaction may take up to 48 hours to show on your statement depending on your bank and how they process your transaction.

Thank you for helping secure this credit card transaction. Your next purchase will be processed immediately and WILL NOT REQUIRE YOU TO DO THIS AGAIN.

----

I ignored it and my item shipped the next day anyway. There are plenty of other shops that sell the same items around the same price anyway so if they didn't ship I was just going to buy from the next drop shipper.

PB Tech did this with my first order a few years ago.  I'm surprised NZ Sale have taken the approach they have as it seems like a lot more work for them and raises all sorts of issues.

Missus found a way to forward the stuff with no extra information they don't already have. Genius! As i said if they refund me, all the better!

joker97: Can someone give some advice on what to do? Give them the info?

It is a NO drama really - as said by many others, it is as a form of anti-fraud measures.

I remember needing this for clove.co.uk, computer lounge, few other stores based in Aussie. There is some countries in the past which I have visited required this (before the chip) when shopping at their mall. I have been shown their written policy due to large number of fraud transactions.

Driving license and utility bill is not really huge thing.

It is a big deal giving much more personal information than is required.

With a copy of the drivers license or passport, which has a photo and other key information, plus a utility bill for your address then the people who hold this would have sufficient details to open new accounts with almost any organisation including the NZ government.

Sorry, but I completely disagree.

It is dangerous to give it to random people but we are dealing with a shop here.

These questions (2) and (3) sound quite reasonable in order to verify that you are who you say you are. Question (1) - not so sure. Option (2) and (3) prove that you are the legit payer because you have access to the bank account.

Would not be happy with drivers licence/passport/power bill details though.

Options 2&3 are sensible verification. Nzsale requirements are silly.

It is dangerous to give it to random people but we are dealing with a shop here.

The shop is full of random people.

If I was the OP, I would have told the shop that I would not be providing the information and if they cancel the transaction so be it.

The store should have put a code on the transaction, that will appear on your credit card statement, for you to then quote back to them. That is what most stores do these days to authenticate you own the card. I personally wouldn't send them my drivers license and utility bill, as it potentially could lead to identity fraud if that was intercepted by the wrong person. I am surprised they are asking for that information, as it does open them up to all sorts of privacy and security issues having that information stored on their computers.

First, we have no idea who the people are who will have access to this information. The information being provided is sufficient to establish identity with almost any organisation in the world. That means anybody who has access to it can use it masquerade as the original buyer.

Second, there are better ways to confirm that the cardholder is the person who made the purchase. Those methods do not involve providing further identity material.

If you are buying from nzsale you are probably better off if they cancel the order instead of shipping you what you thought you were buying.

Have had similar with 2 large purchases in the past. In each case I worked with the seller to provide evidence of who I was and that I had the right to use the credit card.

Why on earth 90% of the people here don't want to work with others to simply and effectively prove they are the owner of the card is beyond me.

BTW when I sent my passport I blocked out the photo and made sure the copy was of low quality in black and white.

Also has anyone who have said to not do it ever provided a travel agent with a copy of their passport?

nuf said.
