I decided to make the switch to Quic and placed an order yesterday. Big fan of the one off $45 static IP charge.  Also took advantage of ssamjh's referral code.

My question is around choice of router.  A bit of searching on the forums has led to be believe that sticking with the ISP provided router is the best option.  Given Quic is BYO I'd like advice on if my current router will cope or I should replace it, and if so, with what.

I'm currently on 300/100 through Bigpipe with a HG659 (non-b).  Upgrading to 900/400 on Quic.  Maximum simultaneous connections would be 4 ethernet and 3 wifi.  All speed critical devices are on ethernet.  It's a single story two bedroom house, wifi coverage is fine, don't need features like mesh.
I WFH and we use Azure in the South Central US region.  For my personal stuff I rent a server at Evoswitch in the Netherlands.  I also run a Plex sever from home.  I mention these things to point out that the majority of my traffic, both up and down, will be international.  I'm not certain if my bottleneck will end up being the HG659 or upstream international links.

For non-ISP all-in-one solutions I've seen the MikroTik hAP ac3 mentioned a few times.  Some of the comments mention don't get it if you're not tech savvy.  I'm not certain where I'd rank myself in that regard.  For reference the most complicated routers I've used in the past have all been running dd-wrt, tomato, or openwrt.  Additionally all my PCs are running Linux so that throws a spanner in the works as WinBox seems to be Windows only.  I'm not opposed to getting two separate router and AP devices either.  I could even try and find a friend IRL with a spark account and get them to buy the SM3 on my behalf ($106 vs $199).  Really I'm open to any and all suggestions here.

tldr; Should I keep my HG659, replace it with MikroTik hAP ac3, or something else entirely?

The HG659 is a really capable router. The main complaint I see the hard limit of 32 devices on Wifi.

At home I run the Edgerouter ER-4 which is a great little box, but pretty overkill in this environment.

I also wouldn't recommend the Ubiquiti Edgerouter line anymore as they're not really getting any software updates or love. They're basically an abandoned product.

Just stay with the HG659 for now. It works for you, and can indeed route Gigabit totally fine. You can always upgrade later if you like also.

The updates have slowed down, but there's been a few over the last 6 months.

Well that was quick and seamless.

Placed an order over the weekend.  Got an email at 9:39am Monday.  It was live by 21 mins later.

Thank you for the advice @michaelmurfy and @ssamjh.  It seems my concerns were unfounded and the HG659 is handling it like a champ.  Didn't even touch a single setting, just shifted the cable from ONT port 1 to 2.

My international upload speed is looking great, download not as good, but I won't pass judgement as it is a different time of the day and day of the week.  The first image is on Bigpipe, second is Quic.

One final question.  I noticed Quic is on port 2, and Bigpipe is still live on port 1.  The turn around time has been so fast, is Bigpipe just slow to respond to the change order?  Or do I need to proactively contact them to cancel services? This is the first time I've changed ISPs on UFB.

Nice! Welcome to the Quic family @nixjr! 👏 (I'm excessively jealous of that 3ms ping on your speedtest in Christchurch!)

I'm going to make an assumption and say this was an Enable connection? If so, transfer orders with Enable can sometimes be a little, er, "tricky" shall we say, so a lot of the time we'll liven the next port (same as many ISPs) - just chuck Bigpipe a message to cancel just in case they haven't seen the change. 🙂

Enjoy!

Hi @quic I saw you recently advertised in your news peering in CHC! Awesome - do you similarly have active equipment in WLG on the Chorus Handover? Wondering if local traffic on-network between quic customers in WLG would get backhauled somewhere or if latency would remain low. (if a few of us switched)

Thanks!

Hi @quic

Any idea on Enable lead times for Fibre install? Purchased a new home and have found fibre is not currently installed. Thinking I will try and place an order ahead of possession and have it scheduled for the first week I am in if possible.

Cheers

Depends, do you have a shared accessway or not?

Enable are the worst to deal with if you have a shared accessway, from my experience at my first place in chch I had already moved twice before enable finally installed fibre at that place.

If you don't have a shared accessway they should be able to install it within a week

No shared accessway handily. Will look to get this booked in for week after possession then.

I am in an Enable area and signed up in 2019 with a new build.  I am on a shared driveway, but I'm the front house, and the tube had already been laid up the side of the home.

My first appointment with the installer was set for 23 days away.  When he turned up he said there was no pathway to bring the connection into the house, and they are not responsible for making a penetration in the wall.  After this I had to get the builders to come back, make a hole in the wall, then re-book an Enable technician again.  That second appointment was 26 days away.

Enable are the literal worst LFC in the country, which is ridiculous as us users of enables service are the shareholders as chch residents

Hiya all! 👋 Apologies for the delay popping onto GZ, it's been a bit hectic with some rain and wind around the show... 😉

Hey @tknz, we do have equipment in Wellington, however this is more on the switching side, and bring circuits back to our Auckland BNG/routers for termination.

We do have plans and want to build Wellington into a full PoP, however it's a little "chicken and egg" at the moment, and need some more growth/customers in the Wellington area first before we can push this forward.

It's definitely a case of when this will happen though - not if this will happen. 👍

Hey @Gorch, to be honest it varies a lot mate - only way to know for sure is to pop in an order unfortunately, but the helpful heros here have given some good general advice. 😊 In general with new installs, we recommend getting the order in sooner rather than later.

Full quic outage? Can't check status page as that's down too and majority of the website. I think I saw some maintenance on the status page around this time but that disappeared

I thought it might have just been me but I guess not. I have no internet currently. Checking from my phone and the Quick status page is down for me too.
