My first post here. Please bear with me.

A Chorus guy came yesterday and did the VDSL connection in about 30 minutes. I have 3 jack points for my phone line and one for my unused fax line. He turned the unused fax line into a dedicated VDSL line (or whatever you call it). He assured me that there's no need to remove the unneeded jack points for my phone line. Is it true?

While the connection was easy, switching on the Internet service proved to be time consuming. The job was finished at about 12:30 and he said the service would be activated within 2 hours (as Telecome uses a 2-hour time slot approach). Came 3pm, no Internet service. I called Telecome and was told 5pm should do. Called again after 5 and the answer was "evening". Tried again late evening and the answer was some sort of "automatic reset done every 7am at Telecom" By 8am this morning, still no connection. Called the Chorus guy (fortunately he left his mobile phone number with me) and he verified that the physical connection is fine. Called Telecom. After a while, the guy suggested me to reset the modem. That's it. All became well!!! Interestingly, every time I called Telecom I was given a different explanation. (Well, I'm not complaining. I'm just sharing with you the process I experienced. I've learned not to get upset as promise is a rare commodity these days.)

Anyway, here's my first speed test result. I'm happy about the switch from Slingshot's ADSL to Telecom's VDSL. Much faster, but cheaper actually. I'm about 200m from the roadside cabinet.

Question: What's a good way to set up Wifi connection securely? Is the easy, one-push WPS button approach very secure? I don't mind doing any manual configuration required, as security is always my top concern. Where can I get the information to configure Wifi connection for the TG589VN V2 modem? (Sorry if this has been discussed before. I've only managed to read 20 pages or so of this thread before I gave up.) As a newbie, I'm still finding my way around here, so please be kind to me. Thank you.

Hi Kassey, Welcome to GZ, and my apologies for your experience described above. We are trying to get communications out to the techs to advise our customers to do a factory reset of their modem as soon as the technician has signed the job off with Chorus.

My team and I work in provisioning, and we have received several escalations from our helpdesk with the same issue. My team and I have had a 100% success rate with modem resets (where we have not already identified an obvious provisioning issue). We are also trying to get this message across to our frontline teams.

I am astounded by the responses you had - particularly "automatic reset done every 7am at Telecom" as I think of myself as a bit of an expert on Telecom broadband provisioning issues, and I have never seen nor heard of this nonsense.

We are not sure why the modems require a factory restart, as it is not happening in all cases. At first we thought that it was only the customers who plugged their modem in whilst still connected to ADSL, causing the modem settings to change, but we have now debunked that theory.

SO for anyone on here who has just had their VDSL installation completed, and you have no service yet, please press the factory reset button on the back of your modem for a few seconds. A blue light will illuminate for approx 1 to 2 minutes, then the modem will restart and once the internet light turns green you should have service.

Thanks for the welcome message. I don't have any bad feeling now.

Since the Chorus guy set up the modem, I didn't think of any need for a hardware reset. Maybe hardware reset should be the first suggestion your help desk folks give out.

Yes, precisely the message we are trying to get across to them now :)

For reference, mine arrived with the DSL interface tagged as VLAN 2. Upon changing it to 10, it started working, and I presume 10 is the factory default.

how does the telecom modem does the vdsl optimization? do you need to restart/reset the modem to get the new optimization?

also if I want to extend my cable length can I cut a phone line and join it to a rj45? (I can't see anywhere that sells these cables)

DLM will read your line stats the first 10 days and tweak accordingly before it settles on a final profile.

I'm not quite sure on the cable front. Which cable are you referring to? Cable in the wall? Between the socket and the phone?

\

Its called a Cat5/6 Cable. You can buy them off most tech stores or websites for example, Cat6 is faster but more expensive. Most the cables you will get stock are Cat5.

FEC errors are to do with interleaving which is a form of error handling. Essentially it manages information loss in transmissions by using data redundancy.

Edit: You can learn more about FEC here

ok ... mine is in the single thousands! is that bad?

sorry for asking stupid questions but there is another burning one ...

why does under "broadband connection"

the PPPoA says "retrying" -? if PPPoA is not used shouldn't i just shut that bit down to stop wasting power? (yeah you can tell i don't have a degree in computers)

K1w1G33k: So here was my old ADSL2+ speeds:

And today I have this on VDSL2:

Not sure why my upload is still low though, router page says I'm connected at 10,360kbps up and 24,576kbps down.

Any thoughts as to the only slightly higher increase in upload speed anyone? Profile tuning perhaps?

i suspect your on a VDSL2 port but not a VDSL2 profile at telecoms end.

Ah now that makes sense with the speed I'm getting. I'll email PL for some assistance :)

This is likely right. Profile takes a few hours to switch and during that time you max out your ADSL stats like this. Once the profile is updated you'll see your actual speeds :)

I checked it at lunch which is almost 24 hours after the install was done, and still at the same speeds at the moment.

May pay to call in and ask them to make sure the Tech called for the profile change, or PM me details and I'll look into it

That's looking better now! :D Thank you PL and Yyrael for helping me out here :)

Day 4, getting slightly better...

Rolling up to day 6...

Day 9 now, seems like this may be my locked in speed which is slower but much improved ping time:

The lower ping usually means you're now on DLM1, so if your line is stable you shouldn't see any more changes.

There is usually a slight speed decrease when moving to DLM1 which is what your on now. The upside is the lower latency so if your a gamer its great!

connecting a phone with the vdsl connection

Excuse my ignorance please :)

I was given a ph number with my connection so i think i may use it even though i haven't had a landline for years. So with adsl it had a splitter and you plugged the phone into it. With VDSL there is no splitter so just wondering if you just get a double jack connector and plug the phone into that or is the ph number that comes with vdsl a VOIP number and you plug the phone into the modem ?
