Hello,

My partners iPhone 5 was dropped and now has a smashed digitizer, LCD looks fine. Shes only had it about 3 weeks but hasn't had time to look at Apple Care or Vodafone's policy. Does she have any options or just get it repaired privately?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Apple are now doing IP5 screen replacements at apple stores in the US but that's not a lot of use to you in NZ.

We do the screen replacements for $280 in Rotorua but there will be someone who can sort it near where you live.

Unfortunately physical damage is not a warranty issue, apple can do an out of warranty replacement for around $400 but it's still cheaper to replace the screen.

It basically means if you break it, its not on warranty. So you will have to pay what it costs to fix it. If you have some kind of insurance on the phone then that might cover it.

There is quite a lot of places now that do repairs of iPhones that have had their displays damaged. From what I understand they change the glas and screen when they fix them.

See this is exactly why we need an Apple Store in NZ. Walk in, hand over the broken iPhone. Pay the replacement fee if you broke it, or pay nothing if it's a warranty claim. Get given a plain brown box from under the counter with a refurbished iPhone in it. Walk out.

Not so good when your phone is only about 3 weeks old, as per the OP, and you get a refurbished phone that is who knows how old.
I'd rather keep my own phone and just pay to get a replacement screen, if I broke it.

The fact that Adelaide got on earlier this year gives hope that on a population basis Auckland might get one in the near future.

But for Apple to open a physical presence in NZ makes it harder for them to order a double Irish and Dutch Sandwich for their NZ earnings, - so opening new countries is always a big step....

I would try replace the screen myself it it was my device,
Looking at the youtube videos for iPhone 5, it looks incredibly easy to replace the screen compared to an iPhone 4

Looks like the option is a private repair then. My house insurance will probably cost more to do the claim than the cost of the screen. Thank you. I've got a topic under Mobile handsets for recommendations in Christchurch.

As soon as you get your replaced-screen-iPhone back you essentially have a refurbished phone anyway, only if it's not done through official channels you have no recourse if anything goes subsequently wrong, and you void your AppleCare warranty from that point on.

I'll take a refurb any day.

If you go through apple you also have the option to have a hold put on your credit card and have them send you a foward replacement.

Not with all manufacturers, but I believe apples ones are very good. I have had a DOA refurbished item before with another manufacturer, and it was not in a great state, even though it was being sold directly by the same manufacturer.

Yes we need a proper apple store in NZ, and it would then be a simple process for the OP, as apple stores look after their customers. But they should probably contact apple NZ/Oz, and they may help, but I think they will have to pay.

I smashed my iPhone 4 screen a year or so ago.

Thankfully I am in Melbourne and we have an Apple store so I made an appointment, went in and walked out about 5 minutes later will replacement. Cost AU$175 (which my insurance covered anyway).

NZ certainly needs an Apple Store.
