Any reason why they are using vlan tagging? Is it for VoIP or something?

I called today to sign up and apparently they have signed me up on a 12 month contract for FibreX 200/20 with an extra $20 off a month. I had to ask if I am supposed to get a new modem and the lady then said she would set up a technician to call me and arrange a time for the install. She said it would take 5-9 working days. I am not 100% sure if its going to happen now as she didn't really seem too clued up.

In this instance, I suspect it's mostly so that even thou using different technology it's presented in the same way as a UFB install. As to why UFB does this, @sbiddle 's blog is probably the best answer to that.

Have a look at this thread for more info on maxing out your connection on the R7000:

@drunkghoul

Seems to be that the broadcom chipset those routers have will max out at around 400-450Mbit if you've got certain features enabled. I've reset my to factory and am getting about the same as with the HG. Trying to work out what i had turned on that was forcing it into CPU

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Probably so they don't have to keep two models of the HG659 around? Make the WAN interface the same for cable/fibre.

Had my upgraded connection installed today. The Downer engineer gave us a half hour heads up and arrived on time. Installation was done within an hour (might have been much less). Speedtests are showing 200/20Mbps as advertised, so am pretty happy. The wireless router (HG695) is a horrible little thing with a terrible web interface so have managed to get my Netgear RT-AC66U working on the new connection by changing the non-obvious settings as described here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=40&topicId=143367

Now my question... I told the operator on Friday that I'll pay the extra $4.99 for a static IP address, but my public IP address has changed twice since switching over to the new connection. The first IP address I had with the new Vodafone router was 27.252.xxx.xxx and the IP address I got with my Netgear router is 118.92.xxx.xxx. Is this a result of me switching routers, or is it because I haven't yet been assigned a static IP address? I realise that since I'm using my own router my support options are more limited, so I'd prefer to avoid calling the support team to ask. Is there a way to check this?

Yep. We're on BigPipe (gigabit fibre), but had the same issue with our R8000. Had to disable QoS and the Traffic Meter. Now we get ~940Mbps.

I was told no charge for a static IP (perhaps because I, like most in this thread, already had one?). I'm using the HG659, and have a 118.93.xxx.xxx address.

Connection is continuing to perform exceptionally well. It's above and beyond what Vodafone expects too: "In really good conditions on our FibreX Max plan, we expect you’ll get download speeds of 700-900 Mbps and upload speeds of 90-95 Mbps."

Crazy to think that it's 40 Mbps above those expectations. Most of my friends don't even have 40 Mbps total bandwidth.

Latency has also been stellar. It's consistently lower than before, and I'm generally seeing ~3-5 ms less to Syndey. Not a drastic difference there, but still nice to see. :)

Have you tried the factory reset option? (you will have to reconfigure your setup - e.g. DHCP / VLAN 10 etc)

Administration / Backup Settings / Revert to factory default settings

Hi geekzoners,

we have fibrex 1gb just put on today, but i have no idea how to set it up on r7000? do i just click get dynamic ip from isp and change the vlan?

could some one tell me the step by step way to get this working on my netgear r7000, would be a lifesaver, (wife is hating no internet lol),

 Pretty much thats it exactly

set it to DHCP and then set VLAN 10 up and you're good to go.

It will be interesting to see how you go performance wise. From memory the R7000 is also a broadcom chipset

But don't make the mistake I did with leaving the HG659 in the chain.  :-)

When you say leave the hg659 out of th chain - what do you mean. Is it different from my current cable connection where my cable modem plugs into my router (r8000)?
