Hey guys,

A few days ago I became a Vodafone vdsl2 customer (home + broadband) and performance is good for downloading files i.e. I get around 2.5MBytes a second typically from big sites like amd.com/intel.com. I just tested Steam and was getting around 3.2MBytes a sec. Speedtest is also very good at around 35Mbit/10Mbit.

I do not transfer large volumes of data, typically in a month my usage would be under 30GB, which would be split about evenly between sites like Steam and linux/software sites and then about half using P2P namely bittorrent. The bittorrent traffic is all for a private site dealing with authors/artists sharing their creative works and typically has a vast amount of uploaders and minimal downloaders. For the last 7 years I have rarely had a download speed of below 1.4MBytes a second during peak hours on adsl2.

My download speed using these torrents is now roughly 1/3 of what it used to be (now 400KBytes), while checking the same torrent at my neighbours house yields about 1.3-1.5MBytes/s (on telecom adsl2+ like I used to have).

My question is this, is this something other users are experiencing? Are people out there getting good P2P on vodafone vdsl2? If most people are getting good performance does anyone have any idea of what the issue could be (modem config?) I have tested the performance on both my home PC and laptop so it is unlikely a PC issue although I cannot rule it out completely. Is there any form of shaping at peak hours? This would be a killer for me as I only use from between 6pm - 9pm. I am happy to pay a lot for a small amount of data and all I really care about is download speed. Have other users got over 3+ MBytes on P2P? (or even 1.5MBytes?)

EDIT: I have just played around with the connection slots in uTorrent and increasing it from 35 to 100 seems to of improved it a bit (just under 1MByte a second) but I am concerned that this indicates it is quite likely there is traffic shaping. On telecom I could cut this down to around 5-10 and I would still max the connection out at around 1.3-1.5MBytes.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I downloaded a popular Linux ISO and capped at 43Mbp/s, (Thats my actually throughput rate on speedtest.) 5MBp/s total.
Your line would cap at 3.5 ish.
Torrenting is non priority traffic and also it may be delivered differently to a telecom peer vs a Vodafone peer.
Found a random torrent that was pretty bad to start with, All EU based seeds. (A Linux ISO i dont already have, Not many of them left)

Yep, they are open, I can connect with all the seeders and get data (just not as fast as I expect). The configuration of my pc has not changed since adsl2. All that was changed was unplug the telecom modem and plug in the vodafone modem.

Have you managed to get > 1.5MBytes during peak hours? I would been keen on getting a screenshot of your bittorrent connection config. If it is normal on vdsl to configure 150+ peers then I guess I will do that. I have currently configured "Maximum number of connected peers per torrent" to "125" and it has improved it a bit. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks for that. I just tried that and the port check webpage linked reports successfull connection but sadly there is no noticable difference so I'm not sure port forwarding is the issue. 125 connections and I am getting roughly 1.2 - 1.3 MBytes now. Note: this might be an acceptable speed for some but for me that is the same/slightly worse than what i was getting on adsl2. If this is "normal" I guess I will have to lower my expectations or move back to adsl2.

I think its what your downloading isnt peering well.
I smash over 3MBp/s in peak (Private Linux ISO site)

BTW.

Utorrent is 100% default apart from its not getting a random port on startup. Please dont tell me you forwarded the port i did and expect it would work. You do need to assign the port on the client.

Sorry could i also get the bandwidth page. It is the one that shows how many peers to use. Or just type the number you have in that box. Thanks heaps mate, I really appreciate it. It is good to hear other users can get good speed which means it is most likely on my end.

I got the exact same success message when I run the check port page with the bittorrent port.

EDIT: bumped it up to 150 connections per torrent and it is up to 2.1MBytes. Not sure why I have to increase this so high or is this normal?

Increased peer to 300 and I am getting close to 3MBytes. With 5 peers I get a useless speed - but interestingly next door I get max with only 5 peers. Very interesting but not really sure why. I think I am going to leave it for a few days with my modem turned on (it's been turned on for less than 48 hours since i switched to vodafone) and see if that helps settle it down and then try a few more times at different times of the day.
