Behodar: Home and a Pro both use the same media; it's only the product key that changes.

As for Maps, it seems like a poor design decision if there is no way to tell it (and save) where you are.

Sorry I'm a little late to the party - was wrestling with Network adapters in my own Windows 10 update last night...

To address the point you made regarding maps not allowing you to set your current location, it's using the system's location settings, so why should an APP be allowed to set that for you? And if you have a "current location" setting in Maps that does NOT set it for the system as a whole, you're going to annoy a whole OTHER bunch of users, who don't understand why setting the location doesn't "stick" in other apps...

Anyway, maybe you've tried these suggestions but here goes anyway:

First, go to Settings...Privacy...Location, and check that it says "Location for this device is on" - if not, click "Change" and flip the switch. Check that the switch under "When location services for this account are on, apps and services you allow can request location and location history." is On also. Then, scroll down to the "Choose apps that can use your location" list, and ensure that the switch for Windows Maps is On too.

Failing that, if it's still not working, check that you also have a wifi device or GPS or other location aware sensor connected and switched on, so that location services has something it can actually use to detect your location.

Installed on laptop. All seems ok, apart from some things I click on flick up a window quickly, which just as quickly clears from screen. One of those 'optional features' which is on the start menu.

I have found it takes a few hours to completely sort things out then that behaviour goes away.

I was kind of keen to install, to see if some image processing software (now unsupported) would run under win10. However, I have an enterprise edition of W7u from which I will do a clean install on this machine - when I get around to it - as I don't think I want W10 home edition as the OS on this machine, mainly because of limitations on update scheduling.

Do you have Media Centre? Do you have sufficient HDD space on the C: for ugprade?

Yes to media centre, and yes, over 300 GB free space on a 500 GB SSD.
I guess I need to remove media centre - had to think about that, as I had to look to see if it was installed, as I never use it anyway.

Media centre removed, nothing happened (but it tried another update - with same fail message after Media Centre was removed), but this is a little odd in a back to the future kind of way. PC clock is correct, and in correct time zone ((UTC+12:00) Auckland, Wellington.
The compatibility check app was "last run" in 4 hours time!

Those with Windows Media Center will also get Windows DVD Player App - which I do, as I did not remove the feature during the ISO upgrade.

I just completed install from ISO with no problems. Human nature is a strange thing - if the update install had worked and prompted me to install, then I'd have been happy to wait some days or weeks before allowing it to install as I'm a bit skeptical about possible issues, but because it didn't work, I got impatient. Everything seems to work fine - took me a while to find color management applet, profiles etc from Win7 have copied over, hosts file, last backup from W7 is accessible. DVD player is there - but I'd have to dive into piles of junk in the basement to find a video DVD, SWMBO is even dumping BD videos down there now.

I presume I'm safe to delete the $Windows.~BT, $Windows.~WS, and Windows.old folders in a few days.

I have had a mixed experience across my machines.

My test machine (from 8.1) had downloaded a folder called

C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows

and I ran setup from there and it completed with no issues apart from the fact that my Nvidia GEForce 8400GS is not supported by Nvidia anymore. Windows would not give me an option for 1920x1080 so I tried the Windows 8.1 drivers and that seemed to work okay.

On the other machines I have a folder called

C:\$Windows.~BT

and there is a setup.exe in that folder. The folder size is about 6.01GB. I guess I could run the setup from there.

On a second machine (also on 8.1) the folder C:\$Windows.~BT is only 1.77GB and the folder C:\$Windows.~WS is only 83.1KB

I am guessing that this machine is not ready yet.

On my Surface Pro which I have left on all the time, there are no folders so nothing has been downloaded yet.

I have downloaded the ISO. Could I run that and it would preserve all my Windows settings and not ask for a registration code?

yes just use the ISO, it will inplace upgrade and get you the Windows 10 key just like Windows Update does

I've been seeing this on and off all day. Each time I see this I've been getting my hopes up thinking "This is it!", then nothing. It just disappears. Doh!.

OK. I ran it from the USB I downloaded and it went pretty quickly. The whole installation took less than 45 minutes. And now it's up, Windows is activated so no worries there. This went much faster than my desktop but that was an older dual core AMD AM2 CPU and the Surface is a Core i5 although both have SSD's.

I see your problem now, and I am trying to find a solution for it too.

FYI: I've reported this in the Feedback app and a search for "location-aware" should find it if anyone wants to give it an upvote
