SirHumphreyAppleby:

Ge0rge: I received an email from YouShop today :

So it would appear it doesn't matter that something maybe be below the customs threshold, YouShop will still collect GST.

I expect that this may reduce the amount of custom they receive, particularly for cheaper items.

The GST legislation was quite broad so as to include such things. E.g. AliExpress, eBay and Amazon Marketplace are meant to pay, even though the individual tranders may be under the threshold for registering for GST.

It would be ok, if at the same time they got rid of the duty on some items (clothes and shoes).

I have no issues paying the GST (so long as I'm aware of it when I'm buying). It's the IETF and duty (on some items).

It would be nice to buy clothes or shoes worth more than the $220 at which the duty (and therefore IETF) kicks in.

Will be interesting to see how this is policed, i often get stuff off aliexpress where the seller  (off their own back, and not under any sort of direct instruction by me) declare the value is about 10% of the actual value.

Looks like it makes youshop considerably less attractive than other reshippers if they will be doing that thing where they assume the value from invoices with the parcel and dont let you change it.

AliExpress will collect this, not the seller, so the declared value becomes irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure tax evasion is illegal.

For items below $1000 NZ they are removing clothes and shoe tariffs.

"New Zealand-based manufacturers: Footwear and clothing manufacturers may be adversely affected by the removal of tariffs on imported footwear and clothing under the proposed $1,000 threshold (given that the few remaining tariffs are mostly on clothing and footwear manufactured in certain countries). However, these industries have already had to adapt to the increasing non-collection of tariffs, as the phased implementation of New Zealand’s free trade agreements mean that the amount of tariffs that would otherwise be collected if no action is taken would be decreasing over time anyway."

I just hope that  we don't get hit twice with sales tax.  Last time I bought something in the UK   and I   sent it  via Youshop there I was charged UK sales tax.  Would hate to see 15% NZ GST added to that   or buying something from a US state with sales tax and you get hit twice.

Pretty sure that's why Youshop (US) is in Oregon - Oregon has no sales tax, so if you are having something delivered to an Oregon address, the seller shouldn't charge you sales tax.

Not sure about the UK, but I do know if they are sending to an address outside the UK, you don't pay the VAT. Youshop is a UK address though, so I guess you could get double pinged.

I suspect you will, and I'm equally sure Taxinda won't care if you get double taxed as long as she gets her 30 pieces of silver.

I wonder if large retailers like Amazon will charge GST directly, only to have Youshop charge it again, so we get double taxed.

How would they know to charge you GST if you're shipping it to YouShop in the US?

Good question - it's probably based on shipping address so they probably won't. I just remember seeing it added in the past, but that will be for direct shipments.

YouShop is effectively owned by the NZ gummint so it’s not surprising that they are finally needing to toe the line on this - not a good look otherwise.

Does that mean the threshold for clothes and shoes changes to $1,000 on 1 October this year?
