Star Wars: The Force Awakens Imax.   Quite like the movie especially on the large Imax screen. 7 out of 10  The finance committee was so so .  She though that the story line was a rehash of Ep 4.

Just watched Legend.

Biopic about the famous Kray twins (gangsters that ruled London in the 60s)

sort of like goodfellas but not as good. (still good though, just not 'goodfellas' good)

Tom Hardy is superb playing both the Kray twins though.

I give it 8 out of 10

Ex Machina - 7/10

Finally got around to watching this last night.  I'd heard good things about it and had a high level of anticipation.  By and large, the expectations were met.  It was a good story, nicely focussed on the small cast.  There was very little extraneous back story or exposition.  The central idea - using a variation of the Turing Test on an artificial intelligence - was cool, and the main leads of Domnhall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander do a good job of building up the key questions and debate around what it is to be human.  It's creepy in places, as you'd expect it to be, but it also doesn't shy away from lingering, dialogue-free scene shots which give the story time to breathe, or from wordy sessions where the ideas get teased out.  It was also refreshing to see action, such as it is, handled with a soft, muted, almost delicate touch, which contrasted with the inherent violence of some of the ending scenes.  In other places, this softer touch added to the realism being created - for instance, when the main protagonist arrives at the secluded mansion retreat near the start of the film, and is greeted by extensive security checks at the door to the bunker, a "typical" film would have had the door close behind him with a BOOM to reflect the strength or power of the facility.  In this film though, the door slides shut with barely a whisper, which to me reflected the more realistic refinement that an extremely wealthy recluse would demand.

My only criticism really is the pacing of the film was a bit plodding in places, but I think that was a deliberate choice by the director/editor.  I think the idea was to slow things down to allow the ideas time to ferment, but in my tired state it just gave me too much temptation to rest my eyes...

Force Awakens IMAX 3D at ak. Not good in IMAX format.

I saw it first in standard 3d with the lighter type of glasses it was great. Then 2d, it was great again with different strengths. This third time with the IMAX format and the thicker glasses it was too dark and camera focusing mainly on foreground interaction in many scenes meant there was not much to look at.

Might be the last time I pay the IMAX tax the risk / return is not great.

On the positive side the trailer there for the new Tim Burton Alice looked absolutely fantastic and better than anything I saw in star wars. Even so I will see that in the standard 3d when it comes.

Btw, did IMAX reduce in size?

100-Foot Journey

Yes it is a romance of sorts, yes it can be put into the chick flick type category but as something to watch with the wife it sure as heck beats Bridget Jones and Nottinghill.

I enjoyed the scenes set in India - brought back memories, and the scenery, gastronomy was very good. I came away mostly unscarred having laughed and been entertained. Also it stars Helen M. What could be bad about that.

As a fan of action and darker /harder type movies (Think American History X) - it was nice to find a movie I could watch with my wife and we both enjoyed it. Definitely up there on my top 100.

The Water Diviner

Russel Crowe - despite all the bagging of him is quite a versatile actor, and never more so when he is playing an Aussie. I came away with a new appreciation of Galipoli from both sides and really started to understand some of the historical significance of the event - especially for the Turkish. Again, something my wife (who studieid history) and I could both enjoy, with some action, a little bit of romance (no sex scenes or face sucking or long meaningful talks thank goodness) and a good (but sometimes predicatble) plot. Worth the price of admission especially if you are Turkish, Australian or Kiwi.

Martian

Think Tom Hanks on Castaway, without Tom Hanks, without an island but with the balls (or stand ins) and a lot more dark humour and a large helping of science support from Nasa. Oh and did I mention Duct tape? lots of duct tape.

From a science point of view it was well done. They even managed to work out ascii and hexidecimal codes correctly without stuffing things up. Matt Damon was superb (no surprises there) the story line was predictable but as a piece of sci-fi with out space ship battles, laser swords and amazing futuristic gadgets (but lots of duct tape) it was an excellent watch.

Cowboys Vs Aliens

Speaking of laser swords and futuristic gadgets - Take Daniel Craig, strap a futuristic gadget that shoots stuff on his arm,put him back in the cowboy days, add in a pissed of Harrison Ford, throw in some space aliens with flying laser shooting ships and you have an epic western, errr sci-fi adventure errrr oh heck - that's why they call it cowboys vs aliens.  I'm on my fourth or fifth watch of it - and I watch almost nothing that many times (except Ronin, American History X and the Serenity series). mindless fun.

Death at a funeral - Original English with Allen Tudyk

Take a world class comedic actor and have him play a drug virgin (Alan Tudyk), fill him full of amphetamines, set him lose at a funeral, remove his clothes at least once and you'll have an absolutely riotous, side splitting, wife friendly movie to enjoy.

jtbthatsme: We watched Ace Ventura with the kids last night....was as enjoyable as ever however within a couple of minutes we realised it wasn't quite as young child appropriate as I'd remembered so a couple of times we needed to fast forward a little.

After that we watched The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel as the lead it wasn't as bad as I expected and the visuals were quite well done.  If you like those sort of movies and don't expect too much it can be a good nights viewing.

Have you tried Hansel and Grettle <spelling mistakes all mine)

Good action - funny, strong leads, easy watching. Not for the kids but my wife enjoyed it and she is not an action flick fan normally.

And if you like Kate Bekinsale in leather (but not the last of that series) - this is right up your ally.

lchiu7: Just saw The Hateful 8, the new Tarantino movie. I made a point to see at the Arclight Hollywood in a Roadshow presention. This was a special presentation in UltraPanavision 70 with an overture, intermission and booklet given out.

The movie itself was about 3 hours long. While set in the old west, it played more like an Agatha Chrstie murder mystery but with the manadatory Tarantino graphic violence. But diagloue was great and witty and I never felt the movie lagged.

Seeing it in UltraPanavision 70 in a 2.79:1 aspect ratio was a revelation. It's a pity no cinema in NZ will show it that way as there are apparently no 70mm projectors around now. Maybe Peter Jackson could help out but he's more into his 48fps digital stuff now.

I was pleasently surprised by Django - again western again violence but as an antislavery flick with historical context it was great. Like hiding vegetables in ice cream, I was entertained and enlightened.

itxtme:

1) Growing meat to eat is probably the most wasteful energy conversion system, ever.

Sure. And what's the alternative? Everyone start eating salad, a known low energy source?

"The biggest thing wrong with salads is lettuce, and the biggest thing wrong with lettuce is that it’s a leafy-green waste of resources."

Sorry, had to post here, even if completely off topic. Please start a new discussion in the Health/Fitness sub-forum.

Did someone start a thread?

There is a false premise that energy intensive is bad - where the energy is free like the sun, grass, water etc - natural grazing like we did before Canerbury started going milk intensive, is perfectly acceptable.

And population growth? The whole worlds population could fit inside rhodes island USA. See the link below - very funny.

The Big Short 8/10.

A comedy drama about those who forecast (and profited) from sub prime collapse.

Various interesting characters working parallel to each other. Broke 4th wall a few times especially to explain some of the obscure banking terms.

Great lines. Last third had feeling of waiting for the titanic to sink as we know roughly what happened.

Laughed out loud more than 5 times which is a win for comedy.

Going to buy the book.

A.

The Revenant.

6/10.

As usual these days, it went on and on and on and on. Tighter editing would have made for more suspense and a better film. At least 30 minutes too long.

Watched Straight Outta Compton last night and man it was awesome. I'd recommend it to anyone who had a little interest in their music or rap in general.  I wasn't even put off by the length the best movie I've seen this year.
