Bung: In Max Cryer's "The Godzone Dictionary: Of Favourite New Zealand Words and Phrases" he states that the settlers adopted the word from Maori first print appearance 1820. At that point there were over 100,000 Maori and only 200 - 300 settlers.

When I learnt the meaning of pakaru 40/50 years ago I remember being told it came from ‘buggered-up’ and because I thought that was interesting, it stuck in my mind.

However that doesn’t mean it’s gospel and there’s certainly no reference to that on the ‘net. OTOH there are plenty of references to pakaru > puckeroo so it’s clear you’re right on that. And Max Cryer was definitely a respected authority on these things.

Watching the NRL Final live on stuff.co.nz

"Farnworth almost punches through a hole on a good carry, and it's then ex-Panther Capewell who gets to the 40. That sets up a shit to the right, where Staggs ends up tumbling over Turuva and finally being finished off on the opposite 40. Haas then pushes an offload on the next, but it's a loose one and Reynolds knocks on trying to gather. Panthers ball on their 40."

That is a fairly questionable action in the middle of a game on the field I have to say.

Wouldn’t this be more appropriate in the Politics thread? 😀

(Quote from Eat Well for Less)

"Colour is flavour!"

Does that mean "burnt" is the ultimate intense flavour?

If so, then I'm the flavour master!🙃

Black is the absence of colour.

facebook and instagram will soon cost money and the EU will ask tech companies (i.e. netflix, youtube, cloud services ...) to pay for telcom infrastructure network traffic too ... who (apart from the users) will pay for that? That will be funny … you get more expensive, I get more expensive. I already thought self-hosting was a discontinued model (oum … not really). 😉

The users already pay for the traffic that netflix, youtube, facebook, instagram use, in that they pay for all the network costs. If those companies have to pay for their own traffic, in theory your own network costs should go down. You can then use those savings to pay facebook etc for access.

But I suspect that paying for many social media platforms will kill them. FB is ok for filling in time and a bit of unimportant discussion, but I don't think many would pay for it. And a big part of its value to organisations is its ubiquity... if even 25% of a club's members aren't on FB, then there's not much value in the club having a FB page.

However, it comes from the 12 major telcoms, because they have to handle all this enormous demand for datarates with their infrastructure to allow the techs to earn money „for free“ … (that‘s behind the second topic). Seems to be a kind of network usage fee. I will never pay for „(a)social media“ because I don‘t use it (except my support for open source or non profit).

„No homepage (facebook/twitter/whatever only)? No business!“

Needing a tow doesn't make me smile but how it was collected did.

The roadside assist operator didn't believe me when I told them the Vespa would fit inside a van so they sent something a little bit bigger just to make sure.
