As one of the conditions for my home loan pre-approval, I need to reduce the credit limit on my credit card.
I went into the bank to do this - I figured this would be simplest. Waited in line for a couple of mins before speaking to someone to explain what I needed. They then wrote a short dissertation into their computer (about 5 mins of speed typing) before actually talking to me, at which point they told me that it would take about 20 mins to go through this process, and did I have time to complete it now, or would I prefer to do it online (via a secure message). No surprises, I went for the online option.
Get home, open online banking and send a secure message. A day later, get a reply telling me that my limit can't be reduced by that much on this type of card, I need to change my card type, did I want to do that? Sure, fine.
Three days later, get a message back saying that I need to either go in person to the branch to be taken through my options, be read a disclosure, and confirm terms and conditions, or ring the call centre to do this. This will take about 10 mins.
Sigh.
I get anti-money laundering provisions are a serious thing, but really this is just ridiculous. Surely it shouldn't be this complicated to tell a bank to not let me put so much on a credit card. Yet, the last time I wanted an increase in my credit limit it was done in minutes with almost no questions asked.
