chevrolux: Not matter who you are with you will get charged the standard $50. It comes from Chorus. Even in a straight provider churn the $50 fee still prevails.


Examples/proof?

The $50.xx charge is for a standard new copper connection (or at least meant to be as I understand it)

There was a 'churn fee' I believe (unfortunately I can't seem to find proof of this anymore) that was around $25-50, that was charged by Chorus/Telecom Wholesale to recoup Adminministrative costs, INSTEAD of the standard installation charge, this allowed some ISPs like Actrix or Orcon to pass on the benefit by offering reduced length contracts or no contracts if you churned. (Actrix was something like 3 or 6 months instead of 6 or 12 months for a new customer, Orcon churned our broadband+tolls without charge or contract back in 2010/2011-ish).

The only reason I can think of the need for the $50 fee for a customer with ADSL currently, is if they are connected via an ULL exchange and hence on the Vodafone/Orcon/etc networks.

I'm not a Chorus customer so can't say for certain. But I see a good amount of new connections and provider churns. Seems they all get charged some sort of connection fee unless they sign in to a contract. The only time the $50 gets waived is when the ISP decides to absorb the cost.

BigPipe + WXC VoIP. You can't get the unlimited calling on WXC VoIP unless it's on their Fusion bundle, but if the main issue is that you are not actually in the main Auckland calling area, then I'm sure there would be a way to get an Auckland area number :)

The $50 reconnection fee is applied at the wholesale level and relates to premises which have wiring but not had an active resold Telecom HomeLine service for last month. It's the joining fee for a HomeLine essentially.

But that's not the case either.

Someone can move out one week. The conection goes intact. And then someone moves in and pays $50.

It isn't ISP specific it is just the intact connection fee.

It may be that you are currently on a naked connection, and the cost involved is to re-establish POTS.

Really curious as to why WxC is so commonly recommended for VOIP as opposed to 2talk.

2talk: $10 for a number anywhere in the country, 2k local minutes, 250 national. National costs 3.45c/min
WxC: $11.50 for a number and unlimited local. No national. National costs 5c/min.

Think 2talk also has more features, though I can't be sure.

So is it the service? 2talk has been good to me, though I am only 1 data point.

I would guess its probably the safety of the unlimited local calls which are the most common call types.

For me I briefly had a VOIP line with WxC before Snap offered VOIP on ADSL and I chose WxC at the time due to the high likely-hood someone would spend hours and hours on the phone with local calls like my mother does.

Roughly a 2 hour phone call every second day, Not out of the question, Especially at the moment with all the stuff going on in the family.

That's pretty amazing. Might be worth setting them up with VOIP on both ends to make it free. Perhaps even skype? I got my whole family using skype, and my Mum hates technology.

And no... they dont offer data packs. Only modify your plan....




And to those saying use VoIP.... will I be able to transfer from Orcon Genius to 2Talk/Wxc and keep same number...  it was originally a "POTS" line/number, then ported to Orcon Genius, so I assume it can be ported to another VoIP provider ?
