It's not going to deliver economic growth though...

On a more serious note, the huge jump shows there is definite demand for broadband in NZ.

There's still some way to go though, compared to other countries - once DSL without the $42/month "free local calling" becomes available, I expect the number to further increase. From memory, and I could be wrong, I think there are 1.3 to 1.4 million phone lines in NZ. Not all of them are DSL capable of course, but that should give an idea about the total market size.

Demand is probably driven by price rather than need. If Sky was $10 a monthly everyone would have it.

I see Contact energy have raised the daily power supply charge from 71cents to 97cents - a 35% increase. Any savings in the price of broadband will now be negated by the extra $7.50 p/month in power supply charge.

Power = $29.10 p/month and Gas = $39.00 p/month whether you use it or not (a grand total of $68.10)
Phone = $42.00 p/month with as much local calling as you can consume

A telephone - and broadband - is discretionary, as you know. You CAN live without it, but life tends to be a lot harder than needs to be.

Try living without gas or electricity though - you don't have a choice, and that's what annoys most people I suspect. Do I have any choice? Contact or someone, the difference is barely worth spending effort investigating.

I can use Telecom, TelstraClear, or even Vodafone for phone serivce, if I'm feeling lucky. With Power I'm knackered - and that's it.
