So - Ghost of Tsushima!

Borrows gameplay from all the usual "open world" suspects and doesn't have too much originality in the core gameplay loop.

...but - it does it *really* well and the production values are so sky-high that I am completely immersed in the thing and enjoying it far, far more than any of the AC games from which it so clearly apes.

I much prefer the older AC/Batman style of combat that Tsushima builds upon - more rhythmic than RPGish - and it suits the setting well.

I share a lot of your sentiments but have to disagree about the graphics. Watchdog had a Downgrade-gate and I am surprised there hasn't been more attention on this. As an example, there's a scene very early on (I am deliberately being vague to not spoil things for anyone who hasn't played this yet) where the PC got knocked onto a beach by a baddie. Right after that, I saw textures that were so low res that I wondered if I was looking at a 2009 game. The art style and world is, overall, great. But look closely you will see a lot of difference between what's in game and what was in the promotional videos.

The gameplay and combat is great. The fights are more dynamic and far more skills-based than AC ever has (or ever will) be. I am about 3 to 4 hours in -- and perhaps it's due to a relatively low level of unlocked skills -- but I am finding that I have to do cheese acts like bunny hopping to get through some fights. What has impressed me the most is the relatively limited UI and very dynamic sense of discovery. The sound engineering is also superb.

Very interesting detailed breakdown of the combat options within AC Valhalla -

There's a lot going on there (for better or worse) but it has me more intrigued now.

As I hoped and expected, it looks like it’s shaping up to be really great. Unlike one or two commenters here, I like the prospect of a 9th century England and Denmark setting.

So, finished Tomb Raider 2019 main story over the weekend. I usually enjoy the combat and somewhat enjoy the puzzling aspects but almost without exception find the collectibles bore me to death.

2013 I finished the main story, had about 30% of the game left to explore, uninstalled it without a moments hesitation. Comparatively, last night, I spent a couple of hours just going from Tomb location to location completing some of those.

Almost without exception those have been very fun, thought provoking and worth while. I'll probably finish all the Tombs and then move on.

I have the Jedi game, the Guardian, Witcher 3 all to complete, Assassins Creed Odyssey also. I can't decide if I want to play origins. I own it, but I feel like Odyssey is the Apex and Origins, whilst stunning visually, didn't feel quite as fun to play as Odyssey.

I am ready for another Spiderman/Batman/Just Cause type game really soon, nothing that exciting on the immediate horizon except flight sim right now.

Not noticed that myself! Maybe I haven't been paying attention to the right bits?

I am running a Pro @ 4k (well 1440p) and have a HD with an SSD Cache in...

Wonder if it is a limitation of the game or just a hitch in the texture streaming you have seen?

Installed Destiny 2 over the weekend, and getting into Subnautica.

Have now lost access to Xbox thanks to daughter installing every NBA game she owns......  really need the ability to play Xbox games on PC without needing the Xbox on... (And no, game pass not an option.... at this stage)

Or I attempt to find a cheap Xbox and dedicate that to my PC.... ;)

Sadly the whole having to heal yourself thing doesn't appeal to me and what I have now seen of the combat doesn't really interest me either. It will have to review exceptionally well, or have a change in mechanics to compel me to play now.

So, I got to see some updated gameplay footage of Baldurs Gate 3. BG was one of my favourite series behind perhaps Neverwinter, and I quite like turn-based strategy games. My fav of all time would be the X-COM series. I played the remaster but as good as it had improved, it was just hard to play for some reason.

I'm also looking forward to BG3 for similar reasons. Re XCOM have you tried Gears Tactics? I'm still waiting to get it at a good price.

Yeah I got it half off. I am not sure how I feel about it, the difficulty was quite unmanageable so I got a bit frustrated with it.

One of the components of Xcom I have never enjoyed is when you play for x hours then realize you made a fundamental error with base building and you can't really recover. This can be a bit like that.

Thanks, I've never liked that in SP games - having to play a few "practice runs" before you can actually play it through.

Interesting, I found that the Tomb Raider I have been playing was actually not the latest, so I have one more in the series! I may never want to go Tomb Raiding again :)

personally, I have found that with each new reboot it gets worse. I loved the 2013 game, have played it several times, but the 2015 one only once, having gone back admittedly to get more collectables, but I may one day start afresh again. Currently struggling my way through Shadow of the Tomb Raider, not enjoying it so far, not sure why, I think it just feels less open, confined to certain areas until you kill someone or something, rather than be stealthy or engage when you choose, its just lacking excitement for me.

Yeah, I recall watching the review by IGN, and they were raving about it, but it didn't LOOK fun to me. I already bought it, a while ago on a 60% off sale, so not a lot to lose, but the one I just finished was fantastic.

Unlike Naughty Dog games which go on and on and on and on and on, and the puzzles and climbing are just a real hassle rather than thought-provoking and fun.

I found a whole bunch of DLC for the one I just finished, exploration of the manor, so I'll play some of that too and see if it's similarly fun.

One thing I *really* notice between the Xbox and PS4, is that the PS4's easily upgraded SSD, makes gaming a LOT more fun. Xbox loading times can be quite painful as a result.

It's a real mission to upgrade the Xbox Internal HDD, and external SSD's aren't cheap....

I am looking forward to next gen Consoles both having SSD by default.

The extreme loading times of AC Odyssey - even on PS4 Pro - are really getting to me.
