I don't recall the last time I genuinely cared about the story in any game. Possibly God of War? I thought the story of TLOU2 was meh mostly. It was semi interesting I guess. I usually skip cut scenes for side missions, because I don't really care why a character wants something done, just give me a marker on the map and list of objectives and leave me to it.

So far I have found the variety of ways to acheieve a task quite entertaining and engrossing.

There's a lot of game stories I've loved this generation.  Hellblade, A Plague Tale, etc etc.  Story is the biggest thing for me.  I'll play a pixelated platformer if the story is engaging.  Big sandbox games don't keep my interest for long.

Just started L.A. Noire on the Switch. It was the first game I ever bought for my Switch back in April 2019 but its taken me this long to get around to playing it. So far I've only played a couple of cases but am enjoying it.

So over the weekend, I played Hot Pursuit Remastered. I am not sure why, but despite vastly improved graphics and very similar gameplay, I don't have the same compelled feeling to play this the way I expected to, and did of the old version. Perhaps I just need to get further along.

I also played LOTR Shadow of War which was free with my PS Plus Subscription. I loved the original game this was a sequel or expansion to, was one of my favourites of that year. This seems a bit more convoluted and the the controls seem a bit convoluted. I spent more time mashing buttons than I really like. There is a mechanic with the mini bosses, where if you do the same thing to them too much, they become immume to it. That's sort of good, but also kinda frustrating.

I am hanging out for Miles Morales Spiderman for the PS5 later in the week. Other than Borderlands 3, I don't have much to play on my Xbox Series X! This happened at the release of the Xbox One too, no really decent games, so it sat unused for like 6 months whilst I thrashed my PS4.

This gen, I think the biggest difference is the controllers, I am hanging out for the new gen PS5 Controller. A lot has been made of the haptic feedback, I tend to find these things a bit of a gimmick, so hopefully it's not.

I note the reviews for the Pulse 3D Headset are very good. I will be interested to see if my Arctis 7 will work with the PS5 as optical isn't available.

Edit: Seems it will work well via USB.

As I expected, a number of the reviewers I trust gave fairly tepid reviews to AC: Valhalla. For some of the reasons, I was concerned about, but also due to the huge number of (some game breaking) bugs. Combat is getting either raves or panned outright. I got it free as part of my Uplay+ on PC, so I will give it a go, but I expect it's unlikely I'll change my position on it. A shame as Oddessey is probably GOTY for me so far.

AC Valhalla on PS5 - first few seconds in.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I'm about 8 hours into AC-V and a couple of things aren't quite sitting right for me at this point.

When watching reviews and demos there was something about the characters physical stature that I couldn't put my finger on. Having played it, I see it all the time now, they're always hunched over in some fashion, even when standing up and out of combat they're leaning forward slightly. So many curved backs.

The combat always happens in an arc, sweep, sweep, sweep. I admit a lot of my Odyssey combat was with Achilles spear which was very directional... I seem to prefer more targetted combat I guess.

But perhaps the biggest for me is the facial expressions on the lead characters aren't nearly as clear or engaging as Odyssey. These look like video game characters, so between that and the sweep sweep combat, it is a video game, not a world I can disappear into at this point. I'm enjoying it enough to look forward to what's coming next but it's certainly no Odyssey.

LOTR Shadows of War

I spent quite a bit of time over the weekend and Friday playing this, I am quite torn. I like it, but it's not as fun as the original, and there is a fair bit of complexity that I am struggling to get a handle on.

I don't really understand the gem system etc.

Sunset Overdrive on my PC, came as part of the XBox GamePass for PC.

It is the most mindlessly braindead fun and funny game I've played in a while. The eyes hurt quite a bit from the crazy colours after playing a while, but damn - it's just too fun to stop.

I am torn as to whether I think Cyberpunk is going to be great or not. I guess gameplay videos don't really tell a good story given I didn't think I'd like Watch Dogs 3 and I actually really like it.

I have it pre-ordered and won't cancel. Not sure what the purpose of the post is, just musing I guess.

I guess I am worried it's so ambitious it won't be able to live up to the hype.

I tried twice to play it, but I couldn't 'get' it.

If any developer is capable of delivering on the hype it's CDPR. Especially after so many delays. Currently slated for Decembruaryish

I got Squadrons cheap for Black Friday, gets good reviews, so far first two hours, am not enjoying. Being a big fan of Wing Commander, Elite, and many other space games, I was excited, but alas, nope, I don't like the controls on the box, the HUD/radar in the ships isn't great and I don't see myself finishing it.

I've been playing that in VR and it's outrageously good that way
