Hi everyone. First time poster just found the site, going to be a fav bookmark I can tell! :)

Anyway, thought I'd ask a hairy question to start things rolling.

Just got a Sony Ericsson T610, and an MSI BT dongle (the 100m one) and I'm having some troubles with the XTNDConnect software from the SE site. I've read both articles on this site about it:

With XTNDConnect
and
Without XTNDConnect

But I can't seem to get mine to work as per the first article. Basically I figured out how to pair the devices and sync Outlook and transfer files and that all works great, but that is using MSI's software and drivers.

The thing is, I installed the MSI driver pack first (as I assumed I should), and then after reading the first article about XTNDConnect decided that would be better (allows you to sync contacts more selectively) so I installed the XTNDConnect package. Should I have removed the MSI driver package first? Does the XTNDConnect package contains drivers for the dongle?

Symptoms:

MSI software works great, sees, pairs and talks to T610 as advertised.

XTNDConnect doesn't see squat. When I run the Dial-Up Networking Wizard from the Sony Ericsson menu (the only option there) it searches for the phone for a while and then gives up.

Unlike in the article, my menu does NOT contain the items shown in this pic:

Could someone set me straight here?

Cheers,

Welcome!

Have you manually connected the mobile phone before trying to connect using the mobile phone monitor?

The download from the Sony Ericsson site is for the XTNDConnect software only. The other icons are installed with Phone Monitor, from the CD. Do you have the Ericsson Mobile Modem Settings icon in your Control Panel?

Ahhhhhh. I see.

Like most geeks, I ignored the CD and went straight to the website. Didn't realise the download is not the complete package.

So considering I have arsed this install process, would you recommend uninstalling the XTNDConnect stuff, leaving the MSI stuff installed, installing the stuff from the CD, resintalling the XTNDConnect stuff and then hoping I haven't stuffed it?

Thanks for the reply,

Right. Tried my theory above. Didn't work.

"Have you manually connected the mobile phone before trying to connect using the mobile phone monitor?
"

Not quite sure what you mean here. I did manually add my pc as a device in the T610, before I even tried installing the Ericsson software.

I've installed everything from the CD, followed by the download from Sony Ericsson (Pack1_1.5.7.exe Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB 2002) which I now suspect was no more up to date than the CD. In my Start Menu I only have:

Sony Ericsson
Dial-Up Networking Wizard - Can't find a device
MMS Home Studio - Runs fine, doesn't need BT
Sony Ericsson Image Editor - Runs but complains "No T610 Series detected"

and

XTNDConnect PC
About XTNDConnect PC
Enable tray menu for Sony Ericsson phone synchronization - The tray menu has always been there anyway.
Synchronize Sony Ericsson Phone with Outlook - Runs but just about everything is greyed out.
Uninstall XTNDConnect PC
XTNDConnect PC Debug Log
XTNDConnect PC Help

Any ideas?

The basic install sequence was:

1) MSI Bluetooth Software (dated 12 May 2003).
Worked fine but restrictive for syncing, as mentioned above.
2) Installed 30.1mb downloaded from Sony Ericsson site.
No joy
3) Uninstalled 30.1mb downloaded from Sony Ericsson site.
4) Installed everything from CD (Comms Suite, Image Editor, MMS Home Studio).
New options (as above), but no joy.
5) Installed (again) 30.1mb downloaded from Sony Ericsson site.
No joy.

I normally don't have such problems with software, but I suspect both the MSI and Ericsson programs are trying to the same thing, but the MSI one was installed first and isn't giving up the rights!

Next step might be to uninstall both?!

Since you've installed everything from the CD, you should be all set to go. The "manual" connection I refer is needed so the computer knows which Bluetooth device to use when an application opens a serial port.

You have to open the Bluetooth places, find the T610 icon there, right-click it and select the "Connect to Bluetooth Serial Port". This should bring a dialog with something like "using COMx:" where COMx is the BT client port in your computer. This is the port you need to fix in your programs now.

Thanks, that did the trick :). I appreciate the help!

It was a little diff for me, probably cos I have XP and those screenshots look like 98(?). Anyway, for others having trouble, the difference between the guide I linked to, and the actual way to do it is:

I had to add another serial port, and in my case it made it COM port 9. Then, using 'Phone Monitor Options' which is in the control panel (not the Sony Ericsson menu) I could enable and reserve COM port 9.

Then when I ran the Dial-Up Networking Wizard from the Sony Ericsson menu, it could see the phone and I could set it up.

Note: You will probably have to manually add a modem driver. In my case I had three BT modems there, but they were generic modem drivers from the MSI install and not specific to my T610. If go to 'Phone and Modem Options' in the control panel you will see what I mean. Click on the Modems tab, then on 'Add...'. Chose your modem from the list, and the Manufacturer you are looking for is 'Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications'. It is the only one with the T610 listed. The other choices are Ericsson, Ericsson Mobile Platforms AB and Sony Ericsson but just ignore them.

Syncing works well now, much better than the generic syncing with the MSI software. It syncs contacts both ways properly, and even though the T610 contains less fields this doesn't cause any problems when syncing from phone to pc.

I'm suitably impressed with XTNDConnect (despite the overly complicated setup) and might even look at the full version for three way syncing with my iPAQ. Has anyone tried that? What happens when you alter a contact/task/calander item on the PDA and Phone independantly and then try and sync all three (PDA, Phone and PC) at once?

Windows 2000 Pro SP4 - please don't call it Win 98, my machine is very aware of its need for a facelift .

I'm glad this is working for you now. I'm using the Nokia 3650, but my Ericsson T39m is still here and it's a very trusty mobile phone. I wasn't impressed with the T610 when it came in for a review, but it works well, like all Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

Sorry :). Was going to guess Win2000, but honestly couldn't remember which looked like which!

I'm aware of the T610's 'faults' (for want of a better word) but it was that or the S55, and for my purpose (BT GPRS with iPAQ 2210) the T610 was the safer option. The screen is pretty cool too. ;)

So has anyone tried three way syncing with XTNDConnect?

I've done sync between my Pocket PC, Outlook and the T39m, without a problem. Pretty cool stuff I admit.
