Started a couple of days ago, was fixable with a few refreshes, but now an error message at 50% every time.

I have just received some information from UnoTelly support. It seems Netflix has changed something and we may need to null route some DNS servers. More information in this article.

Hi All,

It appears that Netflix is not loading the correct streaming catalogue correctly.

To test if this is the case, go into search in the Netflix app, find any random title, click play. See if it plays.

@turb, yes this is something you change in the router, I just followed the instructions on Unotelly and did not get any joy with Netflix via my Sony TV

. I have a Netgear router. Has anyone else tried it yet?

Being on Vodafone ADSL I have an HG556A router which isn't in the UnoTelly list. I've been in and made some changes which haven't taken effect so I need to reboot the router. Funnily enough, the wife was complaining when Netflix wasn't working last night. Now, when I'm trying to get a fix in place she's watching Youtube and won't let me reboot the router. Can't win...

It's possible updates to client software could be causing problem - there have been a lot recently across a number of devices. Can anyone who has it still working comment on if they've updated or not and also anyone who hasn't got it working?

this is what i did, netflix still doesnt go though, did i do it wrong?

it said to make the subnet mask 255.255.255.255 but there was no subnet mask box, just the alternative eg /24 and im not entirely sure how you translate 255.255.255.255 to that.

Just trying to follow what's going on here - so, are we saying that we could force these DNS to use slingshot global mode on the router and stop some weird public DNS lookup that I don't yet follow, or are we saying we have to do that specifically for a 3rd party service such as unotelly?

OK - reading again, I'm a bit slow today. So the summary is that netflix is doing a forced public DNS lookup - which I assume would have to be built into their client - which would confirm my suspicion that client updates were causing the issue, I believe I've seen recent updates for netflix on every platform I own (which is to say Silverlight, ios and android) which would sit nicely with the theory and may mean older clients work OK.

So we block the public DNS that netflix looks up on our internal router (could also be scripted by the Global mode guys if they put their minds to it).

Then netflix client gives up searching for public DNS and falls back to regular DNS.

Is that correct?

So, running DD-WRT entered the following:

iptables -I PREROUTING -t nat -p udp -d 8.8.4.4 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to-destination [ 202.180.64.10
]
iptables -I PREROUTING -t nat -p udp -d 8.8.8.8 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to-destination [ 202.180.64.10
]

Where 202.180.64.10 is the Slingshot DNS Global Mode Server. Rebooted router. Plays one video then reverts to non-working state. I notice this behaviour with each try, it always plays one video then fails. It must be doing the forced public DNS lookup only at the point of the video playback.

DNS "hacks" (because that's all a solution like this is) were always going to face this sort of problem if content providers decided on a clamp down.
