The past six months, I've had absolutely horrific performance with Orcon.
I've contacted Orcon numerous times regarding performance, had a technician out, good performance for roughly two weeks before it dropped off again. Speedtests suggest I average (on a good day) between 2mbps down, and 6mbps down. Never above 1mb up, and ping beetween 19 to 30.

My account ID is: 10882251
Static IP
Orcon Unlimited Data
My router is a TP-Link Archer D7.
Here are my DSL stats
I'm reasonably rural. Morley Road, Glenbrook.
I have friends merely 4km further away in Waiuku, with speeds over 20mbps on Spark.
My connection is to a cabinet (I'm pretty sure) only 1km away.
I have run isolation tests etc.
My PC is massively capable:
CPU: i5 4690K, 4.8ghz
Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7
Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro, 2400mhz
GPU: Gigabyte 980Ti G1
PSU: Corsair RM1000
Windows 10, running on two freshly secure erased Samsung 840 EVO SSD's in Raid 0.
A/V: Eset Smart Security 8
My system is run on a master splitter.
My PC is connected directly to my router, and the router is right next to the system.
There are only two PC's in the household, my rig and my mums PC, which only sees up to a couple hours use per day.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, or something done about it.
No one else is doing anything, so discussion about switching provider has been the recent choice of conversation.
This is not worth a fraction of what we're paying, when only kilometres away, friends are getting fair speeds.
Proof of speeds from George Street, Waiuku. Spark.

Alistair

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Somewhere near here, I presume? Very weird though, the sync rates are way lower than what we would expect from this distance.

Your DSL sync stats aren't readable as they're too small. These are fairly critical to give any advice.

3.6/1 with a attenuation of 36.5dB

I'd say the main problem looking at those speedtests is the upload is getting maxed out.

I would agree here, from your speed tests I see latency is in excess of 700ms with this extremely high latency it looks like congestion.
From your screen shot above your maxing out your upstream and usually the main cause of this is someone is running torrents on a device somewhere.

As ADSL is Asymmetric saturating one of the streams will affect the performance of the other stream, Due to the upstream having the lower number of the two its easy to saturate.

EDIT: I did a google on your router its wireless so it might be worth disabling the wifi when running an isolation test, this will insure no-one is secretly using the connection

I would also suggest getting your internal wiring checked.

Your sync rates are bad and should be much higher. Based on the map posted by another post you are in a VDSL zone so must be close to the cabinet.

Based on the fact the customer is likely on an ISAM and that speedtest is showing an awfully slow upload my pick as well would be the OP saturating their upstream as the cause of their issue.

Sync rate however is a little slow for the attenuation.

Hey guys, cheers for the responses!

The DSL stats screenshot /should/ open to a larger image upon clicking on it, however I'm on my phone now so I'll edit it when I get home.

I've run a complete isolation test numerous times with wifi disabled, all devices both wired and wireless turned off. We only have four wireless devices in the household, my phones and my girlfriends phones. However, only two are in use. 2x iPhone, 2x Xperia's.

I rarely torrent, and a BitTorrent client is only open when needed, so that's really unusual that my upload is being nerfed- is there anything else that could do the same?

Yeah I am bang on where the map sits me!
The box is only at the end of the road- and I've contacted Orcon in the past about being dumped onto VDSL but according to them, it'd be too "costly"?

That's unusual. Our VDSL plans are more expensive than our ADSL plans and we'd typically only advise you not to change if you weren't that close to your cabinet.

You're more than welcome to send me through a PM and I'll double check whether VDSL is a go-er. Otherwise, if you want to include your contact details I can have our tech team look into the speed issues again.

Cheers,

Cam

Hey there Cam!
Yeah, I don't mind the additional cost(s) for VDSL though. I would love to switch to VDSL but after several attempts to do so, I've received dismal reasoning for it not to go ahead. The most frustrating being "it's not available in your area", yet, I'm only like 40km away from the biggest city in New Zealand.
Waiuku has VDSL and I'm ahead of Waiuku.
A Chorus technician made it out here this morning, so my current speed is:

I still feel that for my location and cost, this performance is poor.
Paying roughly $100 a month, having had technicians out, several times contacting Orcon about the matter has resulted in continuous disappointment.
I'd pay $30 for this. I had better performance 3 years ago with Vodafone on borderline suffice equipment.
I'll PM you Cam, cheers for responding.

VDSL only goes 900m, so this runs out very quickly on a rural road. If you are too far from cabinet, the RBI Wireless may be another option: http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html
Alternatively get in touch with me if you would like a master splitter installed. This will help achieve maximum achievable performance for your line. If you are a few km form cabinet though, you still may not gain much and upstream on ADSL2+ maxes out at approx. 1Mbps anyway.

Distance from a major city is largely irrelevant. There are well over 5000+ ISAM cabinets and exchanges across NZ and plenty of people in rural areas who have far better performance than people in cities. If you're going to start comparing locations there are people in Mt Eden who have worse ADSL2+ performance than you.

Speed is not going to change no matter what ISP you use. Your limitation in your DSL sync speed which is directly dictated by the length of the copper, your location, and wiring.

iCloud (or any sort of automated backup/online storage system, like dropbox)  is a very common culprit for this.

With iCloud + photostream it's particularly bad because houses often have multiple devices all trying to sync at the same time.
e.g. you and the family go out, take a bunch of pictures on your iPhones,  then when you get home your iPhones jump on wifi and try to upload them all.  Simultaneously they also all try and download them to their photostream - as does your ipad(s), macbooks, and maybe even your apple TV.  This will easily clog an ADSL connection.
