Been with 2 degrees for about 5 years now.

I have UFB 1000/500 and want to upgrade to hyperfibre 4k.

I would also like a static IPv6 to go with my static IPv4.

After a months worth of runaround, where ultimately 2Degrees tell me they dont do static IPv6 but hyperfibre upgrade will take a bit of juggling, I get a text that they don't do existing customer upgrades to hyperfibre.

SO,

My only option if to go to a provider that actually wants my business.

Any recommendations?

Jan

I don't think 2Degrees ever offered Hyperfibre per say, It's understandable they do now as they're moving everyone from the old Snap network to the Vocus side where they already do under the Orcon brand.
If you really want hyper fibre, Just 'leave' 2Degrees and sign up as a new customer to Orcon.

Seems to be a common theme.

Re: static IP's for IPv4 and IPv6 - when I was with them, I definitely recall being assigned a static IPv6 range although this was on the old 2D/Snap stack. Their ability to issue static IPv6 ranges may have changed with the platform migrations. Your milage may vary depending on who at 2D you speak to.

If Hyperfibre is your objective, that significantly reduces your choices. Otherwise I'd suggest One (I have a static IP with them but don't recall if they do static IPv6).

Quic seems to come highly recommended (they're only offering 2GBPS though).

Not being able to provide a static IPv6 makes it pretty much impossible to use IPv6 for anything much - there are lots of places in various bits of software (for example the bind9 DNS server) where there is no support for dynamic addresses.  It may be possible to write your own scripts to update such static assignments on IPv6 prefix change, but it would be a lot of work.  And it should be unnecessary anyway as IPv6 was designed from the beginning to only do static assignments due to there being enough address space to give everyone a static assignment.  That was one of the most basic original design requirements for IPv6.  For whatever reason, a lot of ISPs in NZ seem to do dynamic IPv6 prefixes, which is a really dumb idea if they actually want them to be used.

On the old 2Degrees network, anyone with a static IPv4 also has available a static IPv6 prefix, but if you have never used it, you can need to ask them to set it up.  The address should show up if you log in to your 2Degrees account.  Since they are currently migrating people who have static IPs to the new network, they have to have static IPv6 prefixes on the new network to do that.

The only reason I can think of for you being told they do not do static IPv6 prefixes would be if they thought you were on a dynamic IPv4 address or on a CGNAT address.  It is entirely possible the people you were talking to thought that.  Again, you should be able to log in and see if their system has you as having a static IPv4 address.  The place to look for this is on the first summary page that is displayed when you log in.  If you have static addresses, there should be a box under the heading "Additional Services & Discounts" - scroll down to find that heading.  The box should be labelled "Static IP Assignment".

EXACTLY,

I need to be able to extend my lab kubernetes stack, and right now, if I can seperate out the inter-node networking to IPV6, I dont have to faff around with VPN over NAT which THEN gets kubernetes networking overlay.

Like you said, it's literally what IPv6 was designed to solve.

If I log in to my account, it shows static v4 and static v6, but I did get them from Snap about 11 years ago.

I have had the exact same experience, which was all the more annoying because yet again when my current term ended, instead of contacting me they increased my bill. When I called, I was told the retention department could call me back on Monday morning (it was Wednesday afternoon). They actually called back the following Friday morning, offering to renew my deal, stating "hyperfibre is only for new customers.

I mean really, what the heck? It's a vexatious period work-wise for me--and we're training two gorgeous puppies as well--so I didn't have time to find another provider. But I will have by next June.

Insulting, really @2degrees

Looks like quic are a good option, even if I have to 'settle' for 2k/2k :)

I assume they would have to replace my current ONT?

Any quic-ies around to chat?

Hiya! 👋

Correct, if you don't have a current Hyperfibre ONT, then we'll get your LFC to install one for you, however this can take a number of weeks..

This leaves you two options:

  1. You could immediately move over on our Sprinter plan with your existing ONT, then put in an upgrade order to Hyperfibre.
This gets you across quickly (pun intended), and then it's a simple cable move when the Hyperfibre ONT is put in; or
  2. You can place a Hyperfibre order with us, and stay with your current provider until the new ONT is installed.
Once the new ONT is installed, your Quic service gets activated on the new ONT, and the service with your old provider is disconnected.

HEY 2DEGREES! THIS ^^^^^^^ IS WHY YOU ARE ABOUT TO LOSE A CLIENT!

Option 2 seems like the best idea ... any estimates on connectivity disruption and installation timeframe?

Also, are there plans to go 4k/4k ?

Looking forward to the clearly better customer service from quic.

Unfortunately can't answer the question on timelines until we place an order with your LFC. Some Hyperfibre orders are being done in a matter of weeks, some months...

Once we've completed implementation of IPoE/DHCP authentication (being worked on now) which is much nicer on CPE router load with these higher speed Hyperfibre packages, we'll be looking at offering 4Gbps. :-)

Interesting, I presume that IPoE/DHCP will also be available for non Hyperfibre plans in the future as well then? It's the one thing I have on my wishlist of features I'm looking for that I didn't see listed on the quic website currently.

Ok after posting here I Tweeted @ 2 Degrees. About a day later I got a PM request from them. It took them several days to "look into it" and they came back with the same answer: only new accounts can get Hyperfibre.
