Morning all, I'm looking for some feed back on suggestions for accounting software for a small business.

I've had a quick look at Xero but at $50 a month the price is considered to greedy (not saying it is, just that's the feed back I've had so far).

Requirements:

* Integrate Kiwibank accounts
* Ability to import customer transaction data from csv or something open or have data injected so that invoices can be generated and or customer records across systems kept in sync
* produce electronic invoices (pdf, the obvious stuff)
* multi user

Ya the cheaper package at $30/m only lets you do 5 invoices aiui.

$360 pa to generate 5 invoices a month seems just a little excessive.

Xero is a little more expensive that some others but it's ease of use and versatility make it cheaper in the long run.  My accountant can log into my Xero account anytime she needs to do her stuff without me having to send her any files or do anything special.

I trialled MYOB and taking into account the initial cost plus the cost of training (MYOB is not easy to use IMHO) and updates, Xero actually worked out cheaper.

I have just started using Wave Accounting. All cloud based. Imports my Kiwibank transactions but doesn't link yet.

Only does accrual based gst reports but I have been very impressed. The price is good.... free!

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

For most people $50 is less than 1 or 2 chargeable hours, in context it's not much.

I use Moneyworks Gold (NZ version), Its a great piece of software!

Imports bank statements from around 4/5 file formats (CSV OFX QIF QBO etc)
Import service/product lists with all info
Electronic invoices/quotes/sales orders/estimate etc
Client / server architecture
All accounting functions ie GST, End of year, snapshot reports, forecasting, accounts rev/payable etc

Is only $999 retail, but I bought it through Noel Lemming and asked for it cheaper, ended up being around $799 I think. That was a few years ago, now they have a new version. Still release updates for mine though.

I didn't need any training for this, just a bit of time to get my head around it, and it doesn't have a per year cost like MYOB. I tried MYOB and really didn't like it, too hard and unintuitive.

I also use Smoothpay payroll for PAYE. Very easy /works well with IRD / cheap. $70? per year.

I thought Xero was expensive, until I started looking at it from a TCO perspective, especially with regard to MYOB's steep learning curve. Plus the automated reconciliation probably saves about $50 of my time each month versus exporting a file from IB, importing it into an accounting package and manually reconciling.

muppet: Excel or Openoffice.

Interestingly this is how I operate something else now because it has 3 bank accounts that have to be reconciled each month and my in house system just processes the bank csv file, figures what's personal and does a gst return for the rest including international customers who don't pay gst.

Xero is dead easy, and $50 a month is nothing in the scheme of things. My accountant logs in and does whatever they need to do, I do the rest. It can save you money that way, and time.

It's hard to put actual value on the time you'll save using Xero - we get this feedback all the time - so I hope you'll still consider us! We do meet the requirements you listed. You're welcome to a free trial as well if that helps. Happy to answer any questions.

How long does the free trial last?

What are the conditions?

We signed up for something today.  No idea what.  I just saw the email in my inbox and haven't even looked.

Lazy today? Sorry but if you are looking to save money, a little bit of legwork goes a long way.

Here:

"Demo and trials are set up using the Large pricing plan. The trial lets you raise up to five new invoices, reconcile 50 bank statement lines and is limited to a maximum of 180 days."

For the record, it took me all of ten seconds to find this information.

Thanks MF,  I confess I haven't even looked.  I looked at the site from my phone and didn't see that answer at first glance.  Someone else was looking at this and when I asked him, he didn't know the answer.  Clearly didn't look to hard.

Not so much lazy today as just busy with other stuff.

You'd be quite right in guessing that this post, on my part, really was more of a general troll just for some user feedback.

I'm pleased to see that there are many positive comments and no negative ones and that there is also support from Xero here on the forums (because we all know how I feel about that one! :) )
