I have a I9000 with poor reception.  I've upgraded firmware to JV9

Using *#0011# I can look at the strength.  As I sit here it bouces around all over the place from -83 to -255 with it spending most of the time around -110.  The I can get 3 bars but I still have "Emergancy calls only"

I know that I'm in a poor signal area but I had no reception on out near Durry yesterday and my mate was making calls on his phone.  Not impressed.

I'm assuming you're on Vodafone/2 degrees as you have a i9000 (not an i9000T) - have a play with different modems; I'd suggest trying BUJP5.

Give us a yell if you're not sure how to flash it.

I thought it was the external SD card (well there were no other choices given) but clearly it wasn't since the card had no data on it!

You live and learn I guess.

Yeah, as I know only too well. Just so you know, I wasn't taking a shot at you... I was trying to make the point that the internal SD is a dodgy backup option to be offering, especially as the "SD" thing is so ambiguous. It took my own lost contacts to discover the ambiguity.

Yep, you live and learn.

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new

How's your data? Your phone doesn't match the 3G frequencies of your carrier.

Data is fine as long as I've got a signal.  I don't understand what you mean about the frequency.  Both XT and i9000 work on 2100

Thats the secondary frequency.

It should be on 850mhz for primary cover. hence your bad data signals

But not at 3G speeds - Telecom uses 850Mhz, and VF/2D use 900Mhz - and the SGS doesn't support both like the SGS2/iPhone 4 etc.

So if I flash to enable  850 then I should get a lot better signal?

No. You have the wrong tool for the job period.
I just hope that you bought the phone from a salesman who misinformed you. Then at least you can excercise your rights under the CGA. If not, then its an expensive lesson.

Exactly so - it's a physical, hardware difference between the i9000 & i9000T - no amount of flashing or tweaking will get around this, sorry.

I hope you can get a refund.

2100mhz is only used by Telecom as inner city backfill in the CBD areas - its a backup overflow frequency, not the primary frequency which is 850mhz

and as stated already, you need a phone with an 850mhz radio, to be able to work on XT properly. youve kind of bought an AM radio trying to recieve FM stations. no amount of tuning will make it work - the hardware is different. :)

sell the phone and buy a telecom version. im selling mine (telecom version) running 2.3.3 JVH for $650, still under warranty for another 4 mo too if youre interested?

Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005, on Telecom 4G LTE.  ROM: Stock Touchwiz, Android 4.3, XUDMJ6  MODEM: MJ4  Kernel: Stock (for now...:)
