A1 here as previously posted.

I cant get my sony to see by synology NAS directly. Not even if I use the DS file app it refuses to connect even though the same app on my phone is rock solid.

So cant play 4k go pro files.

Even if I force direct play on plex server and client cant get more than 8-10Mbps supplied from NAS. (Cat6 gigabit everything). Any get an error suggesting the network is too slow.

Defeats the purpose of those 4k holiday snaps.

Work in progress though.

- ie need to place video files of various codec on usb and go from there.

TV not seeing the NAS directly is the frustrating thing.

Didnt have this problem with any of my other devices (W8, W10, Rasp pi, android phone. sonos etc)

Probably fixed now.

As usual if was something obvious.

Synology media manager was looking for connections on lan port 1 which is default, except for some reason several years ago I inserted the ethernet cable into lan plug 2.

Also changed to sony baria or bravia 1 under device setting DMA screen and broadcast to 100 (s)

Now can connect to synology and play using the default video player avc4k 25 fps aac audio and HEVC 4k 50 fps aac. (mp3 audio doesnt play)

A.

55 Inch LG C8 on sale at Noel Leeming for $4245 from today.

That's not a bad price, and it is interesting to see significant discounting so early in the release cycle.

It will be interesting to see if and when the B8 launches in NZ this year. It's due out in the US Summer, but last year the B8 only launched here specifically for the boxing day sales with only Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming carrying it.

Went to HN yesterday and bought C8 55” for $4,245 less 10% = $3,820. They had a couple in stock, I paid and I’m going back to pick it up today.

NL quoted me $4,000 against sticker price $4,245. They had a $300 Prezzie Card offer running last weekend.

JB said the price was $4,245 - take it or leave it. No deals.

I probably have to eat my words when I said earlier in this thread that pricing would never drop quickly for new products. That's almost as cheap as the 55C7 ever got much later in the year.

65" prices seem to be staying higher though, the 65C7 got down to $4199 during the Easter sales this year so that really is the benchmark.

For those OLED fans out there this makes some interesting reading - https://www.techhive.com/article/3239350/smart-tv/will-hdr-kill-your-oled-tv.html

I wonder whether 2017 was the first real breakthrough year for OLED. Where the price went from ridiculous to just high. Down to the level where those that really care about what they are looking at could justify the expense.
If that is the case, then that bunch of videophiles would have bought their B7, C7, A1 or EZ950 last year (or E7, EZ1000). So they aren't in the market this year. I believe that this lesser demand has meant units aren't moving as fast and so the price has had to drop more quickly.
There are no new 'smarts' this year to try and push demand either.

I would have thought it was more about the reduction in production costs given where the technology is at in its lifecycle & these lower costs can now be passed onto customers.

It could be the opposite. Despite better pricing and choice maybe the sales weren't as high as expected last year, so they are being more aggressive this year.

In fact, I suspect many who were interested in a non-LG OLED wanted to wait for the 2nd gen from the likes of Sony and Panasonic.

Or they just saw a surge in demand towards the end of the season once the units dropped to a sub-$6000 (for 65") price point, and the maths said that starting to discount earlier would be more profitable long term.

Also, Sony and Panasonic have likely streamlined there process to bring their production cost down for the 2nd gen models.

I have no info to support any of this, but I'd be surprised if the demand this year is lower than last year.

Prices are bouncing up and down from week to week. I have taken to photographing the price tag and keeping a file on my phone. The lowest price becomes the highest price I'm willing to pay.
Case in point LG 55" C8
HN 1 Day Sale (28 June) $4907
HN Mid Year Sale (finished 25 June) $3995

And seeing eracode's deal above, $3800 becomes the new benchmark.

The 50" plasma I am looking at replacing was at an RRP of $5000 that I got for $3500, so the discounting is getting down to that level.
The biggest fly in the ointment is my wife has seen the Samsung 'Frame' TVs, and "quite likes them". Gulp.

@Dingbatt There will almost always be a better deal around the corner, you just need to decide on an acceptable dollar figure and and look at any additional savings on top of that as a bonus.

On a separate note, having just gone from a Panasonic 55" VT50 Plasma to OLED, the difference is huge (depending on content of course). I was like you finding it hard to justify, but the picture really is that good.

I would suggest that, if space and budget allow for it, that you seriously consider the 65". I say this because, having purchased a 65" OLED, at my normal viewing distance (maybe 3m) I still can't make out as much detail from 4K content as I can if I lean forward, or sit closer (which unfortunately isn't practical). At my viewing distance I'm not sure that I'd be able tell the difference between 4K and 1080p had I gone for the 55". The resolution really is so sharp that you want as big a screen as possible (and sit as close as possible) to get the full benefit from native 4K content. I wish I had the space and money for a 77"!

I guess my advice is to measure your planned viewing distance, and look at the store models from that same distance.

It think this is right - at the extreme, if you wait until say May next year, the C8 will be last year’s model and will be sold off heavily discounted. And then you might say ‘Hmmm - there’s a new model coming’. Same with all tech as we all know.

Yes, this is all Consumer Electronics 101. My point is OLED pricing is following the same (well worn) track that plasma followed a decade ago. But then it was mainly Panasonic, with high end stuff being done by Pioneer and their Kuro series, and I think Samsung and Sony produced a few models as well (plus some Transonic models from The Warehouse).
Panasonic produced the plasma panels in the same way LG does now with OLED.

However, the time between model release and discounting this year is much shorter than last year. Discounts appearing already this year weren't evident until Labour Weekend last year.

- HN is selling LG and Sony in the name of "End of Month clearance"

LG C8 65" 5,705 NZD

LG C8 55" 4,118 NZD

Sony A8F 65" 5,590 NZD

Sony A8F 65" 4,362 NZD

- NL seems to follow HN Footstep. Almost same price.

- JBHiFi Looks like they don't bother to discount follow to its rivals.

Is it best time to buy ? or wait for Black Friday sale ?

I'm not in rush to buy.

I found the price history from PriceSpy stated that around june, LG 65C8 went down to 4.3k.

So this will be my base for OLED 65".

$4.3k for LG 65C8 is pretty good deal; in fact I would be very tempted for anything below $4.5k.

By the way, since PriceSpy updated their UI, I couldn't see who offered that $4.3k back in June. Is that just me?

There is no way a retailer would have sold a 65C8 in June for that price. The 65C7 only dropped to that price in April on final clearance once the C8 came out.

Yep, I’ve noticed that significant limitation, and haven’t yet got to feeding back to them that this particular change sucks massively.
