Yep - so I accept having to use their required range of ATA's on their carrier grade VOIP network. Such as the PAP2T which I am using right now, and which has served me well for several years with them. But why must I use the mp264 if I want an unlimited data plan? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think sultanoswing is referring to using a VFX supported device, as opposed to Open VFX, which is BYO unsupported device.

No, not yet. I probably won't change ISPs in any instance until we move at the end of this year - so hopefully the situation will be clearer by then. I am most interested on behalf of my dad, who is currently on Fusion 40, and considering unlimited or not.

I will certainly ask if the xnet/WxC employees on the forums here aren't able to provide any further info, which is another reason I hadn't yet asked the help desk (although from some posts on here, the help desk itself has given mixed information).

It's useful when ISP rep's reply on geekzone but there's no gaurantee they will, it's not an official support channel they may simply not have time.

I'd give them a ring or email their support and see what they say.

This is good timing for me, as we're currently on ADSL / Fusion 20 (?), and due to change in usage (cough *netflix* cough) need to increase our capacity and ideally our speed. I think the 24 month term is a bit steep (or at least the fact that it doesn't reduce over time is a bit off). As long as it's only the Voice section of the router that's locked down as the comments imply then that's ok (need to control DNS, DHCP, static routes, wifi details etc.). So, overall looks reasonable as long as the speeds are good.

One question that I couldn't accurately discern from the info in this post or the website content: For moving from ADSL -> VDSL, given it's naked broadband I'd like to have the cleanest connection from the phone line to my house to an ethernet port (i.e. doesn't need to be connected to any existing wiring as such). Does the "installation" of VDSL involve this kind of rewiring, or will it be just to where my current ADSL is?

This is what the Connection & Wiring entails.

Connection and Wiring – where Chorus installs a Chorus VDSL compatible splitter in the network termination point and a new data grade cable to the selected DSL (RJ45) jack point within the premises.

They should only not run a new cable if a suitable data grade cable (CAT5 or above) is already installed (i.e the house is wired in CAT5). In saying that we've seen some cases where the techs will use existing sub par cables (<CAT5) to avoid running the new patch. I would recommend making sure you are there when the tech visits and reinforcing you would like to ensure the current sub par wiring is replaced with a data grade cable (CAT5 or above).

Can't do it from the portal just yet.

I can arrange for someone to call you back, alternatively you can give the Sales Team a call on 0800 123 456 when you're ready and they'll arrange for it to be changed over.

Upgrade to the Fusion Unlimited plan has been completed. Techs fm Chorus arrived this afternoon, all done and dusted in under an hour. Ran new Cat6 from the junction point outside the home into my office where the modem was located approx. 40M of cable. Speed has increased from 13mbps to 31mbps down and from 1mbps - 9mbps up. Best I can hope given our location from the exchange/closest cabinet on the outskirts of town. Will save me approx. $50 a month from going over my initial plan. Kids can now You Tube all they want.

Just updating for those interested - my Fusion Unlimited went live today.

Chorus tech didn't actually do any new cabling of any sort - and my speeds have gone from 16 down / 0.8 up to around 34 down / 10 up.

I haven't had a chance to test it out in anger yet - but faster speed + unlimited data = happiness

I can probably also get my cloud backups working properly with that upload speed.

That's a pretty decent speed increase :)

In regards to that cabling - do you know if CAT5 or above was already in place? (they are definitely meant to run a cable if it isn't)

In saying that is the service is working ok and no side affects are seen you can probably get away with existing cabling without any major issues (mine is currently like this). However if you want to get someone out to arrange CAT5 run to the jack point you are well within your rights to request it - PM me the details if you'd like to arrange this.

However if you want to get someone out to arrange CAT5 run to the jack point you are well within your rights to request it - PM me the details if you'd like to arrange this.

No, pretty sure no CAT5. The main issue was that the jack point was up either up in the difficult to access roof space or somewhere else that he and I couldn't find. Given that we didn't know it was I encouraged him to just rip out the existing wire going into the house, which we could easily see from the outside, and create a new termination point. He refused to do that - so he just went with the existing setup. Not really what I wanted, but the speeds seem good enough to last me until UFB arrives in a year or two. I would like nice clean wiring - but playing "hunt the termination point" isn't high on my list of things to do in my spare time.

Ok - I've run a few speedtests now, download speed is more like 28 than 34, which isn't a big deal - still an improvement.

However, I'm getting 20ms pings when previously it was < 6ms...what gives? (consistent result with speedtest, command line pings, and router diagnostics)

The Chorus tech said my speeds would fluctuate before settling down, but I can't imagine this applies to pings...

Guessing this is a VDSL install? If it is the answer to this question is Dynamic Line Management - for up to 10 days after the install the speeds may vary as the dynamic line management tool tries to ensure the line is stable and working to the best of it's ability. This may mean interleaving is on or low at the moment, which will definitely affect your ping. I'm not sure how long it's been installed but feel free to PM me with your details and I can check it out.
