I'm looking at trying out the XNet service when the 12 month contract is up on my current provider in 2 weeks but from all the comments here I am hesitant. I get decent speeds now with the ISP I am with... I was just looking at getting more GB for a better price which XNet seem to offer but not if I can't even get decent speeds at peak times... say 8 pm to midnight.

Is everyone on XNet getting such bad speeds in the 8pm to midnight period that even YouTube won't stream or are some people still getting decent speeds in that period? I don't care much about the midnight to 7 am period (I should be sleeping in that time anyway)... but if peak international speeds are not even good enough for YouTube that's pretty much a failing grade imo.

Personally, I haven't experienced issues like some of the people are posting here. Every now and then things are laggy but it's never been consistently happening each and every day that I've noticed.. Not on the torrent plan, I'm on flood and it never seems to go sluggish for very long

Same here, only once had issues with international bandwidth when an AU hosted service of a local bank was too slow and the connection would time out. Other than that one instance, no real issues. Sometimes you need to buffer YouTube a bit, does not play immediately, but that is only sometimes and not always. Not a fan of YouTube anyway. Other sites I have not had issues with videos at all.

I'm on the Pakuranga, Auckland exchange and have checked how YouTube is during peak time. Both at 7:20 and at 10:00 tonight the videos buffered the same speed as what the video played at, so pausing for 5 seconds is enough for the buffer to run ahead of the playback. My line is running about 7Mbps with a sync of around 9Mbps, everything is on par with being about 4km from the exchange. I'm on standard Fusion. I do not see an international speed issue (on my exchange).

Lucky for some I'm 3.5KM copper length and only get 3.5MBit! Bloody shonky wiring and cabinets i tells ya!

Im on a new cabinet thats around 50-100 meters away from me but I am capped at 4.5mbit/s !

youtube and other file downloads from overseas stick to around the 30-40kB/s mark from around 8pm to well after midnight for me and youtube generally stutters if it dosnt get more than 35kB/s

tho Steam can go full speed from aussie servers (520-560kB/s) so I presume its encryted data

I'm new to xnet and it's killed off my usual SomaFM listening - worked ok on go large of course. So yeah I'm looking around. Gotta have my streaming music!

Alt-tv streams beautifully, so international b/w for sure

I'm pretty sick of it really. The speeds shouldn't be this slow. Pretty much all the international sites are crawling along at snail space for me at the moment.

The annoying thing is I'm just a person who wants to use the net for the normal things, browsing, bit of youtubing, bit of radio stations, a fair bit of xbox live :) and they all crap out!

Slingshot next up...maybe snap.

Im trying to download a 200mb file on sendspace and it keeps timing up using sendspace download manager.Using the internet browser to download gives me 10K?WTF?

Are you on FS/FS? If you are not on FS upload, then your connection will max out at about 3.5Mbps because you can not reply fast enough with TCP/IP ACK messages. Only Flood and Fusion gives you more than 3.5Mbps.

If the service is not right for you (or anyone else), then change. I drive a 1971 Volvo and do not complain about the performance, because performance is not what I got it for (although at traffic lights I still leave turbos in the dust while they try to spin up).

Depends on ur Rwin and tcp recive window size dosnt it ? :)

if ur upload is limmiting ur download u could try increesing them if ur wantting better download speeds but it will effect any gaming u do

Unfortunately Niel - that's what I sync at ;) (on ADSL2 also!)

Back on topic - the speed does decrease around midnight to ~50K/sec for everything off shore, I can still watch you tube and browse (a little slower) but hey, I work and study so I'm in bed by 1 anyway :P

Of course if you're unhappy with the service Xnet is providing you can just pack up and leave. But I would be inclined to think that many would find that helpful suggestion to be in vain. Generally people move to Xnet for the amazing user pays structure, and the speed options availiable. Some may be motivated purely by the cost aspect but I'm not interested in being nit-picky.

I like using YouTube as a basic benchmark of most users peak time usage. The need to manually pre-buffer or give Xnet a 'head start' shouldn't be accepted. Especially when peak time speeds are so slow that pausing for 5 seconds only works if you do it every 15.

The crux of this is... there are users expecting the connections they paid for (YES! I know of the limitations posed by the subscriber's line, and the ADSL1 tech delivery of the data) and they are not receiving it, and if they are it is statistically during times they aren't using the internet anyway.

Either Xnet is incapable of determining the international allocation required (doubt it). Or they have underpriced their plans to the extent they can't afford for some of the allocation to go unused.

I would be happier to pay Xnet more for a connection, even faster than the current so called FS/FS Flood plan.

I can afford to go elsewhere (especially as I just pass my internet cost onto the business). But I want to support Xnet as they have shown the ability to realise people should be able to tailor an internet plan for themselves.
