"this is costing me $10k a day." How did they not move months ago???

To be perfectly honest:

  1. They are lying about how much they are losing. It's probably more like $3.95 a month
  2. They are stupid. Not thick or naive - just good ol' stupid. Plain, simple, stupid.

I had one local guy abuse me after offering to help transfer to the vendor of his choice for free. Loser....

I just think it's very hard to know what to do if you're not particularly tech savvy- it all seems like a big thing to have to move your site and update DNS and ensure email is working. And then how do you know WHO to move to? Who's *not* going to be the next 24/7? Who's not using fake reviews to make themselves look good?

I had a lot of sites and domains with 24/7 and it took quite a few hours over the span of a week of my time to be absolutely sure that everything was migrated and functioning properly. And I feel I'm somewhat tech savvy- I reckon for your average punter it's a nebulous nightmare.

And that leads to inertia.

Oh I do agree it can be a nightmare if you dont know what to do - but this has been going on for months. If people haven't had luck through the website then surely they must have seen the feedback on FB. I do feel for them but the writing has been on the wall for a long time. If they didn't know who to go they could have called other businesses for advice, tech shops, yellow pages (if you can afford an ad on yellow you must be doing alright!)...

I agree, but I have to say I don't _really_ have any sympathy for anyone who was stupid enough to leave their sites with them - this has been like watching a car crash in slow motion for the past few months and everyone should have left as fast as possible when the problems first arose. I'm glad the DNC has finally done something where the CC wouldn't. I don't think there would be anywhere near 6000 active clients (or even half that now) - we've moved a lot of sites away from them (eziweb.net.nz). In most cases it's really not that difficult to retrieve the sites and shift if you ask the right person. If Melanie Skidmore had had any sense she would have tried to sell what was left to someone who could fix it  while it was still worth something. The brand is irreparably damaged now and no-one would probably want to associate their name with it.

The website eziweb. Not a bad looking site and definitely clean and easy to read.
I would take my business there over 24/7 or pure.

danielwd: Reading all the angry comments on 247's Facebook page I'm just baffled that there are so many people still willing to put up with them. They've been down numerous times now and people still say things like "this is costing me $10k a day." How did they not move months ago???

Hosts being down for days or weeks is nothing new historically.  I think part of the problem is that many people think hosting is a commodity, and they incorrectly think all hosting is the same. So many in this case have purchased based on price alone, and they think it will come right eventually.  But quite a lot of the cheaper hosting out there, is not really up to the reliability that businesses require. Businesses certainly should be buying the cheapest hosting out there, just because it is the best deal based on price alone.   So I suggest the businesses do a good amount of research when looking for a web host, such as where the servers are based, their specifications and redundancies they have in place for outages, and how long the company has been operating for and how many times it has changed hands recently, which is very important. Sending some question emails to the host to get an idea of the quality and speed of their support is also a great idea. Also these businesses should have plans in place to quickly change hosting providers if they need to quickly, and that applies to any host you use.

For people who have been advised that their account with 24/7 was due to be suspended due to unpaid invoices, have your accounts actually been suspended? Or are they still active?

I see FlexiHost appear to have taken things over. Not sure how exactly, but they have seem to have access to all accounts and customers.
They're moving customers over though, not continuing with the 24/7 brand, and are switching the servers off in 3 days. Makes sense, 24/7's brand is ruined and you wouldn't want to take responsibility for any potential lawsuits.

Interesting thing is that FlexiHost, from memory, was started by the same guy that started 24/7, though he seems to have sold FH from there and has a new hosting company now.

From memory, the guy who started Flexihost sold it to Tim Johnson/Safi (which then went under) and was then sold to Calib Finlayson (which then went under) and appears to have been sold to his ex-girlfriend (which then went under?) and has now back to Flexihost apparently which is owned by OpenHost who are owned by WebDrive which has just been purchased by DigiWeb.....

FYI, Flexihost is one of the brands that under the new Digiweb/Webdrive group.  The Flexihost platform closely matched 24/7's, so it was a logical transition.  The 24/7hosting company has ceased to exist.  Digiweb/Webdrive have picked up the remains to try and assist 24/7's old customers salvage what's left of an awful situation.

If there's anyone needing assistance, I recommend they email support@flexihost.co.nz or call 0800 820 017.

Webpage is redirected to Flexihost, they also got the contact details of all of the (old) customers?  So Melanie finally realize that he cannot handle the web hosting business of his BF Caleb? I don't think there's any purchase from Webdrive, the 24/7 Hosting brand has all the negative. I'm not even to buy it for $10. What's the deal? How did FlexiHost or Webdrive got the access to the servers of 24/7 Hosting?  Maybe Daniel from Webdrive who's a member of this forums can give some info?

To be fair, 24/7 Hosting was doing OK for the past year. All of these mess only started when Caleb was gone, that's when Melanie tried to handle things on her own.

Yup, Digiweb/Web Drive has taken over 24/7. Flexihost is the brand it's being absorbed into as Flexi and 24/7 both run cPanel. Flexihost was a hosting business acquired by Web Drive a couple of years ago from Steve Amstad.

Caleb is no longer in a position to operate 24/7 and his ex-girlfriend Melanie, who took over running the company, simply didn't have the technical ability to run it, so it was better off to be acquired.

I bet Caleb wishes he sold it to begin with instead of letting it turn to custard first. Could have made some decent money at the beginning of 2014.

I'm happy to get away from there though. No more shared hosting on a slow server :D
