It should work just fine. XT is using UMTS 850MHz, which the phone supports.

I think you have the conversation rate quite wrong, that price there would actually work out to be:
971.496 NZD
excluding GST

429.99 Pounds + 39.90 Pounds for shipping

Will definitely work on XT though!

Just type the amount and gpb to nzd into google. A great and simple way of doing it.

In a couple of months it'll be significantly cheaper - remember how it went with the SGS1; once the supply and demand balance out, market forces will ensure a price drop, I'm certain.

I'll be shopping in late October so I think the choice will be very tough. There's a whole heap of really nice Android handsets in the pipeline with many more to come in the next 6 months.

Exciting times.

Good point. Seems crazy that Telecom are still charging $999 for them! If you look at it that way then the difference between that and the SGSII isn't so bad. :)

Telecom have their 8GB SGS at $999, and Vodafone have their 8GB model on special at $849 (down from $999). I bought my wife a 16GB VF/2degrees model from Tech Brands Pacific back in Jan, and paid less than $800 for it (including shipping).

Unless you're parallel importing the phones (either directly or using a known importer) it'll take a long time for market forces to bring the price down naturally in our market.

That was part of my justification in getting the SGSII. It was only a couple of hundred more, had no bloatware or fixed contract and is easily switched between networks.

Only a couple of hundred more, is MUCH more powerful, has a better screen, better battery life, better GPS, and double the storage capacity.

I was going to buy a SGS last year, but the finances just didn't quite line up in the right way at the right time. I'm kinda glad I got stuck with my N80 (which is slowly dying) as it gives me an excellent reason to upgrade now.

Exactly the same reasons as me. I'd been keeping an eye on the SGS, the various fixes and mods and was getting ready to buy one when the SGSII was announced. It has been a long wait but more than worth it by all indications.

The SGS had a RRP of ~$1100 on release - more at the parallel importers. So prices have dropped.

However, I wasn't addressing the carriers specifically, although they have specialled their hardware regularly, primarily through discounted incentives to contracts, but also via short term reductions. And anybody who has the readies to buy a phone this expensive (and others like it) would be a colossal idiot to pay the carriers' standard off-contract price. But that's also the market forces at work. They want you on a contract so they're hardly going to make an off-contract price look attractive.

Other market forces are at work though, those retailers who are prepared to discount their stock for sales (DSE, NL, B&B and the parallel people to mention only the local guys) and you can get an SGS1 for ~$800 incl here from time to time if you're not impatient. And as people regularly point out, there are deals to be had by personal imports from overseas.

So, with respect, you're not really correct in your "it'll take a long time for market forces to bring the price down naturally in our market" comment unless you think a long time is around three months. I think that's not long at all.
