Just checked my SGSII's status again, and it's now being "Held for clearance" as of 12.13pm. No idea if this is good or bad.

nzgeek: Last update on the Mobicity phones was at 10:40am. The status shows "Int'l shipment release" and there's a note saying "Package available for clearance". I have no idea whether this means that the phone has been cleared by Customs, or just that it's simply been handed over to them.

Ambrose_1: How long does it usually take for them to ring and ask for GST?
Ambrose_1: Mines got it as well. I guess they noticed a whole bunch coming through and grabbed them.

They usually send a letter and it takes about 1-2 days to get to your place, best option is to ring NZ Post international and get them to give you the NZ tracking number, then ring up Customs, organise to pay it(will possibly take a day or so if this is your first customs item as they need to organise a customs number). Then pay via credit card and it gets cleared pretty fast :)
Mine hasn't hit customs yet....it's still at the border as of 8.08am :(

I don't know if they'll ring, or whether they'll send out a letter to the delivery address.
You may be able to speed things up if you know who's handling your package. If it's coming via Royal Mail then it's probably NZ Post. Call them up, talk to a real person, and say that you think you need to pay GST on your incoming package. They can then look up the tracking number and tell you what the procedure is.
I did this a couple of years ago for a package, but can't remember what the process was. I do know that I paid the fees over the phone using my credit card, but I can't remember if NZ Post took care of that, or whether I had to call up Customs. (IIRC, Customs are only open during normal business hours.)

What he said. First thing Monday get a tracking number, call Customs and you can get the package released over the phone with a credit card. They might have it that afternoon to you that way.
