They are listing them as 1ghz, not 1.2ghz, and only tri-band, not quadband. A bit concerning when their information is so incorrect. They also say "16/32gb storage options" - as yet it's not possible to get a 32gb version of this unit outside of Korea.

Is a $200 premium worth having a local warranty I wonder...

Local warranty doesn't always mean your phone won't be repaired overseas. If they don't have parts they could well still ship them overseas or have parts shipped as required.

Seems to me there is a market for a phone place that has genuine parts and repairs locally and gets phones quickly, though I imagine the problem is in such a small market, the cost will always be a factor.

Yep my experience of repairs with one of the NZ-based parallel importers featuring in this thread (Ezigadget) as posted here - and to be fair, as advised to me upfront when I bought the phone - is that a repair normally involves sending the phone back to Korea to their technicians (perhaps associated with the source of their phone stock).  This was certainly the case even for the hardware based firmware flash that was needed - though he tells me they now have the jumper cable that lets them do that in shop now, at least for the SGS1.

Basically its a case of choose your preferred compromise:
- local bricks and mortar (or website only - but harder to verify local presence) parallel import store obliged by CGA to honour warranty, albeit with potential delays - but no additional costs - if repairs need to be done offshore
- foreign website - cheaper, albeit with GST aspect potentially eroding savings, but no CGA, - just strength of reputation, again with repair delays but also costs (I presume) to return...
- local telcos - not for early adopters, and not for me, but for someone with the right plan and a generous subsidy...

ive just ordered my s2 from ezishopping.

I agree that in the case of failure, the phone might or mightnot get sent overseas for repair.
however, the extra its costing me is worth it.
in the event of failure, all i have to do is get it back to ezishopping....thats all, getting it repaired and back to me is on there back, not mine.

If it does end up going overseas to be repaired this will take time. (more then a local repair anyway)
in order to return it to and online overseas store (ill use clove as an example) it has to be sent back to the uk...and then whos to say they wont send it back to korea......then back to the uk...then back here......assuming they honor a return and repair policy like nz shops HAVE too.

Of course i dont plan on having anything go wrong with my phone! : )
I also dont plan on anything happening to my car or belongings....but i still pay state every month....just in case.

Phone will be in stock and 'hopefully have time' to be sent friday. so this time next week i should be posting in the s2 owners tread!

networkn: I was surprised to read about someones techbrand experience. I purchased a Motorola Defy and other than a delay in shipping which they sent me a voucher to cover, everything was excellent.


That was me: 
Overview;
Purchased SG1 Dec 1 2010,  arrived after 5-6 days. 
Wouldn't work on XT as it was supposed to.
Sent it back
Got rung by owner saying nothing wrong with phone.
Got it back 3rd week of Dec.
Still not working.
Sent it back - hinted at by techbrands that I was not setting it up right and that telecom not supporting phone yet but they will by 22 Jan 2011.  Sounded suspicious, so did some research - what they had said was bollock's but now it was Xmas....
22nd Jan came and went phone still a brick.
Techbrands had me send it to repair company in Auckland. 
Result phone has non-repairable factory fault!.
Yeah vindicated...
Techbrands sent me a new phone early March...
Unwrap it, put in sim yes! finds XT network, texting works. 
Phone my son ARRRRGGHHH he can't hear me and I can't hear him. 
Another bleeding Brick.
At this demanded my money back, techbrands did honour that.
But by now SG2 not far away so decided to spend a few extra hundy and get the latest...

So use Techbrands if you wish, but I never will again.  Their support is shocking and horrendous!

Just browsed the einfotech website.  They have added the SGSII to their inventory as of today.  Bricks and mortar shop on North Shore, Auckland.  Price $1150, which seems to be about $50 more than the price from Clove landed incl GST and shipping but still pretty sharp for a newly released phone like the SGSII.

Not going to lie, haven't heard the greatest stuff about expert infotech (I presume that is einfotech?) over the years. I've worked in a parallel importer (one that has gone bust, but was fairly big in Auckland, had a store in a very busy shopping area traditonally seen as somewhat upmarket) and, to be honest, I'd never buy parallel anymore. Warranty issues etc are too much of a PITA. Just import or wait - you'll get better service from clove/handtec than you would pretty much any parallel importer, apart from maybe Parallel Imported.

E-infotech have been fine when I've dealt with them, although that said I would not like to have to deal with them if a warranty issue was at stake.

its the hassle of sending stuff back to the u.k going to be expensive as , ending up a very expensive toy  in the process

Indeed, though getting many parallel importers to honour warranties can be just as painful. Or just long, assuming you take them to small claims or similar over it.

I think some people here tend to underestimate the actual landed cost of buying direct from Clove/Handtec etc. In my case I bought from Clove and was charged when the $ was a little more favourable than it is now. By the time freight was added (Royal Mail), ASB VISA took their cut, and NZ Customs took GST, transaction fee and Bio-security fee, the true landed cost was NZ$1160. To me, the prices being charged by parallel Importers are very reasonable as long as they stand by their obligations under NZ Consumer law.

Re parallel importers & warranties:

If you manage find a good one with a sufficiently established reputation to uphold and a history of honouring warranties without any more fuss or resistance than you would get from a licensed reseller, terrific, but I'd have to agree with Debin its normally be a bit of a gamble given their inherent business model:


  • no direct relationship with manufacturer who therefore won't cover in-warranty repairs/replacement so parallel importer wears this cost

  • they acquire and on-sell at lower prices (and margins?) almost certainly reflecting this lack of manufacturer support

  • they're then naturally inventivised to resist - or at least try to minimise costs on costs of - potential warranty claims

  • strategies I've seen employed: preference to repair rather than replace immediately as a Telco would do (the former is more time consuming for consumer); push back to consumer that fault caused by them - hoping that consumer will give up... or seeking to charge for repairs done.  

  • I suspect many of the less scrupulous importers would make calculated decisions about how far to resist warranty claims given their assessment of likelihood and impact of material bad publicity on future sales, the visibility (if any) to their prospective market - i.e. any repeat customers, or just referrals from search engines, people walking in off the street?  And realistically what % of prospective customers would actually read feedback in online forums for a start - obviously we would, but I'm pretty sure we're not representative of the NZ public, and even then we have to wade through a lot of conflicting accounts.

I've dealt with them once. That was the last time I'll ever deal with them.
