TechBrands aren't all that bad to buy from. I bought a 16GB SGS for my wife through them, and it arrived quickly with no fuss. They had booted the phone and set out up so that it was in English instead of the default Chinese (HK-sourced stock) but that was out. They provided a wall adapter for the stock charger, as well as a second NZ-socket charger. They even called a few days after the phone arrived to make sure everything was ok. So from my point of view the sales process was fine.

I can't speak about their after sales/support though. That seems to be where the major complaints about TechBrands are centred.

but will the eftpos terminals have to be setup for the nfc chip or do they work with existing terminals , will nz change them, normally they drag the chain for years ....

New terminals will definitely be needed. The terminals will need both NFC circuitry and antennae in order to communicate with the phone/payment card, and programming to do the payment and interface with the EFTPOS network.

It'll be a year or two until we see any kind of widespread rollout of NFC in NZ. And by then we'll probably have SIM cards with embedded NFC chips, and it won't matter if your phone has native NFC capabilities or not.

Getting back to buying from an NZ website vs importing one from Clove in the UK, I am assuming that the UK ones are not parallel imports (ie UK new and thus warranty is exclusively backed by Samsung UK. Therefore although the Nz website ones are covered under CGA, when you consider they are imported from Hong Kong or other parts of the world, their background and reliability could be argued as being less than that of those from the UK. Giving that the hassles I hear from dealing with after sales support from NZ websites, in the absence of NZ new models being availible, importing at this stage may yield a higher quality product. Any comments on this?

The units sold by Clove and Handtec are official UK stock supplied by Samsung UK with a 2 year warranty that applies in the UK only. You can return a defective unit to Clove, and I'm assuming Handtec, and they will on send it to Samsung UK. I was under the impression that the only markets that have received the SGSII were Korea and UK/Europe, so if that's the case, I don't know which market the Hong Kong units were taken from. I'd expect all Samsung product to be of similar quality, but at least some or all Asian market SGS phones came with Chinese keyboards and some other add-ons. Maybe this is the case with HK sourced SGSII's.

It'll be a year or two until we see any kind of widespread rollout of NFC in NZ. And by then we'll probably have SIM cards with embedded NFC chips, and it won't matter if your phone has native NFC capabilities or not.

A highly reliable source tells me that one of the NZ banks is trialling an NFC system with SIM cards with embedded NFC chips using its staff and a few cafes around Auckland CBD right now.

Considering that all EFPOS terminals in NZ have been forcibly upgraded over the past year or two I can't see the merchants rushing out to upgrade them again. Best hope for NFC is on public transport etc..

My phone from mobicity came from Romania looking at the intsruction manual and stickers on the box.

I'm pretty certain you'll need to pay 15% GST, transaction fee and Biosecurity fee on entry if customs pick it up as they've done to many SGSII's arriving in the country. You could get lucky and it may slip through.

You could of course buy it from Clove or Handtec and pay a bit less, or buy from a NZ parallel importer and it'll cost you less than Electron World if customs end up nabbing it.

For any online retailers with .co.nz domains, look around to see if they mention GST anywhere.

If the site says that prices include GST, you should be safe from import duties. If you're paying the seller for the GST component of the phone then they're responsible for ensuring that it's paid to Customs/IRD.

If the site doesn't mention GST anywhere then you may need to pay GST and Customs fees when the phone enters the country. Some retailers (e.g. Mobicity) lie on the Customs declaration to try and avoid payment of fees, but this is illegal and there's no guarantee that Customs will agree with the declared value.

If in doubt, contact the retailer and ask. They'll tell you if you may need to pay GST or not.

Just bit the bullet and ordered mine from Clove. Getting hit with GST, duty etc makes it a fairly expensive prospect, no doubt significantly cheaper than buying locally though.

I got the MHL adapter as well so that should be amusing to play with.

BTW - anyone with an Android device an an always-on PC at home, get "Plex", it's fantastic.
