What is that gonna reset though? Will I lose all my settings and stuff? Might be my only option if I cant figure out how to install this .zip or APK file in CWM recovery.

Have you got Titanium Backup installed? If so, save you current programs.. reset data back to stock via CWM receovery, then after setup, run Titanium backup again (after reinstalling) to restore your programs.. The reset won't clear your internal sd card so your Titanium backup folder will be intact. Better than installing TW again by itself. A reset will clear any corruption.

Yes I do. Problem is, how do I access it. I have not backed up very much things. My phone boots but the touch screen doesn't seem to respond so I cant unlock it. Just need a way to get this TWlauncher APK or zip file installed. :/

when doing a reset Most DATA should be safe like photos music. If you have been connected to google your contacts sync with google then they should be safe. You will lose sms messages and some settings. then hopefully TBackup will help get you back to as you were.
I hope this helps. and you are able to get back up and running.
Also you TB data if on internal sd should not get wiped with a reset

I just noticed the backup option and it's doing its thing so will give the factory reset a go after its done.

Touch screen is working. And I can access task manager. But stuff keeps crashing and there is no icon on the phone. It did go through the adroid wizzard when I first turned it on.

Now it seems stuck on the Samsung galaxy S2 screen after the splash screen :/. Options from here? Is it worth trying the clear cache options etc?

lchiu7: Just to follow up on my post about getting an ICS ROM on the S2 so I could get Chinese, I experienced some strange behaviour last night. Now this could be because I am not experienced in flashing ROMs

We had downloaded a bunch of games from the market including Angry Birds, Talking Tom(!) and Big Mama (cooking game). They appeared to work okay so I turned off the phone and left it.

But the next time I fired up the phone it hung during startup and then I received a message saying Sorry but Big Mama (whatever) has stopped responding and to choose cancel or stop (or words to that effect). But neither button was active and then the phone would reboot.

This went on and on even if I removed the battery and rebooted the phone. It's seems strange that an app would startup when the phone is rebooted. I did try to go to the Apps setting and delete the App but that just hung the phone also.

I then decided to reflash the ROM and that worked fine. But on startup the same thing occurred. I guess Odin keeps all the settings when you reflash a ROM. I hadn't realised it before but when I initially flashed the O2 ROM, I did not have to re-enter my wifi keys so I presume Odin had preserved the phone settings. Similarly when I flashed the HK ROM I did not have to re-enter keys.

Some more searching and I discovered that I should have done a factory reset before flashing a new ROM. So rebooted the phone with the volume up, menu and power button, chose factory reset (there was no data to be lost) and restarted the phone.

This time it started up in Chinese with the (I guessed) initial setup and agree options you see when you startup any Android device from the factory.

Setup the Google accounts, wifi (now it had remembered the wifi WPA code) and downloaded apps.

It seems to be okay now so perhaps my lesson is, when flashing a new ROM always reset the phone back to factory? Or is that incorrect?

No, that is correct: factory reset all the time when going to a new rom. It solves a lot of issues before they even arise that way. Otherwise you risk inheriting or even creating problems like you experienced.

Yes: a lot of people don't reinstall when they flash a rom. And a lot of THOSE people have a lot of trouble sooner or later.

Did all that. Still no go. Time to load a new ROM? Oddly I can still get phone calls etc just I think its missing the TWlauncher app so its missing when I do a reset too.

He's deleted the twlauncher app, which is on the system partition. Reset data doesn't restore apps on the system partition. It only wipes the user data partition.

His best option is to install the latest custom rom; or, if he really insists, use odin to flash a standard samsung rom. Instructions below...

The other people here have got it a bit wrong: factory reset only wipes the data and cache partitions; it does not restore files you deleted from the system partition. (sorry guys).

You have two options:

1. find an appropriate rom on samfirmware.com (check spelling), any English one will work ok. Flash it with Odin as per my FAQ at bottom.

2. (The better option if you have CWM recovery) is download wanamlite ics from xda (or any other rom), put it on your SD card, and then install it from CWM.

Check you have CWM recovery: (power off: then hold in the volume up and home and power buttons until the samsung logo appears and then releast all three. if your recovery has 3e written anywhere on it, you do NOT have CWM and will have to use odin to flash siyah kernel 3.x then try again),

For option 2 use one of the CWM menu's to mount the sdcard for usb access in mass storage mode. That will allow you to copy your new rom to the card (it has to be on the card to install with cwm); remember where you put it. Then unmount the usb mode, and then install your new rom from the menu.

Can anyone recommend me a ROM, not sure how uptodate the recommendations in brendons instructions are.

The rom recommendations are a bit out of date but would still work; and the principal is the same for all of them.

I'll have to update the FAQ...

My recommendation at present would be the ICS omega or wanam lite roms; if you prefer gingerbread, you can't go past Revolution HD v6 (the best gingerbread rom I have used). And I would further install the NEAK or Siyah kernels on top of that afterward (ICS kernel versions of course, watch out).
All on xda.

Sorry for the dumb question, just is my first time flashing the ROM. Bit nervous.

Yes, that is the one I am currently using myself.

That CWM is a bit outdated but should work anyway (if not or you get errors, just flash siyah 3.x with odin).

Flash the rom with the install zip menu. But before you do, do a factory reset and wipe the dalvik and cache partitions from within cwm. No need to reboot after that, just go to the install menu and flash wanam.

It'll take a few minutes, and when you reboot, it'll take a few minutes more to set up. Don't panic, give it atleast 10 minutes (should take 5).

Then set up your new system.

I also went back into cwm recovery and installed siyah 3.x. Or NEAK is also good. Optional.
