Hey Guys.

I've already got a pending support request for this, but it's a strange situation:

Both myself and my work colleague are having terrible connectivity with our home fibre (both with BigPipe). We are consistently having our connection drop if we run something vaguely intensive (like a speedtest). Doesn't matter what router / PC we plug into the ONT. The strange thing is we live in completely different suburbs and I can't see any other reports on social media.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Yup, but slightly different.

My connection is dropping PPPoE every 5-6 minutes, which basically makes my UFB unusable. If I connect my laptop to the ONT and do a manual connection from there it is even worse.

I have had a case open since Tuesday AM and there is still no resolution in sight. Just had an email saying there is no update and if there's nothing today I won't get anymore updates till Monday.

Come on BigPipe, I've been a big advocate for you, but you're making it hard.

Really looking forward to the weekend with no interweb (No watching the rugby tonight). Oh and as I have my phone as VoIP that is broken as well!!

Yes that appears to be the same issue. Pretty accurately describes what I'm experiencing...

I've found that I can browse just text websites without it dropping, but something like reddit will cause it to drop.

Also not looking forward to the weekend without internet, especially as I'm on call for work.

Huh!

Since last saturday I started getting odd things like that happening.

Have had bigpipe UFB since early Feb and have loved it - until....

I found (oddly) doing ookla speedtests seemed to be able to kill the internet. The speedtests would start off fast then just get slower and slower until they stalled - then the internet would be dead for around 5 minutes - (yes - tested on cable only connections). After around 5 minutes it would come back to life.

I was suspecting my router (a TP-Link Archer c7 that I bought and set up for UFB - so only around 3 months old). It has been great until this problem.

I have ended up pulling my old ADSL (TP-link TD-W8968 )which can also work on UFB and so far (only around 1.5 days) I havent seen any dropouts - might just be a co-incidence that its been ok. Have run a few speedtests since going back to the old router and they seem ok.

I am in Mt Eden Auckland if that helps.

Interesting. I also have an Archer C7 that's been fine for 4 months... But connecting my PC has the same issue.

Similar symptoms in a thread from last year, don't think they figured out the cause though-

I have a Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite which up until this issue has worked perfectly. As I mentioned also connected my Laptop to the ONT and that was even worse!!

I'm in Upper Hutt, Wellington.

Also I don't even need to be home/using my connection for it to drop. Had a Ping running from work and about every 5-10 mins the connection would drop. Wait about 30-60 seconds and it would be back.

Thanks Yitz,

I'm pretty sure this is not a router issue, just coincidence with the Archer router. I've tried PCs directly to the ONT.

I'm in Te Aro, Wellington and my colleague is in Kilbirnie.

To those experiencing the issue: can you confirm that you have DHCP disabled entirely on the device you have connected to the ONT? If not, what happens when you disable DHCP? In addition to this, what happens if you disable IPv6 on the interface as well?

Might be of little comfort, but I feel a little better now knowing it's not just me!!

The one thing I have found the most difficult, is getting any information from BigPipe as to what is actually being done. I have resorted several times to using Twitter to contact them. Seems to be the best and fastest way to get a response.

Doesn't help that they only use email, especially when my email server sits behind the flakey UFB!! Can bit hit and miss delivering messages at the moment.

Why would you sign up for an ISP that uses email support yet operate email that requires your internet to be working?
Don't u have a gmail address or something?
That seems crazy!

(Also, why even operate your own mail server?)

Most people have a mobile and don't host their own mail servers so its not that much of a problem.

Why would you make comments on a thread when they dont help?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to try them when I get home.

I'm interested as to why disabling DHCP will have an effect? I'm not very knowledgeable on these networking issues but I thought DHCP is quite separate from PPPoE WAN.

Just had a call from BigPipe asking me to disable DHCP on the external interface of my router.

Just done that and so far so good.

They are, yes. However if both come through at the same time, there's the potential for an issue. Keep in mind that Bigpipe lines are set up so that a connection request is expected through PPP only.
