Hi all

I have just join xnet's HSI Torrent services and I have some mixed result on downloading speed from different webpages so I wondering are those results consider" normal" from xnet?

Here are my observations at ~2:30am:

* YouTube - downloading at very slow speed (2k/sec), unwatchable.

* Apple Movie Trailer site - very fast download speed. (~450k/sec)

* speedtest.net - very slow download speed of the website, end with errors and can not use the testing function.

* Vodafone ADSL speed test page - tested, ~400k/sec

* Astronomy Picture of the Day website - slow downloads.

* Asian News sites - get "connecting" status for very long time and pages won't load.

* Some asian websites won't loads.

* Oversea's website are generally very slow loading expect some popular websites.

Anyone have any ideas? I haven't test the torrent yet, will do it in the weekend.

No ADSL speed is guaranteed, day or night. It is a consumer grade service. On top of that, you are on the torrent plan which gives you free data during the early morning hours so if you and many others have free access then you can expect your speed to come to a grinding halt. Torerent was added specifically to shift the heavy traffic from peak time to early morning hours so that the people that just want to watch a video can do so during peok hours and those that just want to get their porn of cracks or whatever you fancy can do so for free off-peak.

You can never have enough Volvos!

I'm not suprised international traffic performance sux during the free leech time (after 12 on xnet)

Astronomy Picture of the Day website
Asian News sites

Local Cache:
Apple Movie Trailer Site (xnet have an akamai cache mirror)

Local NZ traffic:
Vodafone ADSL speed test page

Considering that Xnet has all their torrenters clogging the tubes from Midnight to 8am I'm not surprised that your getting crap for speeds after midnight... The only reason Apple is fast is because it is mirrored on Xnet.

What server are you testing to?

^ thats mine, Xnet River/Torrent.
The I-national servers are always slow, its been a problem for some time, but speedtest.net isn't a very accurate way of measuring your speed, to measure mine I jump on a well seeded linux torrent (I find Ubuntu is the best) and measure like that. I find that speedtest.net might say 3500k, but I get 550KB/s on the Ubuntu torrent, so theres the difference for you. Another thing might be your lines - the quality of the copper and distance from the exchange. I have no problem streaming youtube videos until midnight, which I can't complain I'm not awake at that time anyway. You will probably find that a well seeded torrent will max your connection, due to the extreme multithreading used in the torrent protocol.

I've had a friend notice this as well, he switched from Telecom broadband to WorldxChanges River plan. He lives in Palmerston North and had reasonable speeds before hand.

After switching, he has successfully halved his throughput and post 12AM usage is a nightmare, its completely unusable. Response from support was a link to the geekzone interview.

Go figure.

Niel: No ADSL speed is guaranteed, day or night. It is a consumer grade service.

While that is true you won't get guaranteed speeds all the time, you do have some commitments when it comes to the CGA and FTA. If you are consistently getting slow speeds (that isn't down to something like line length etc), then something is wrong. Particularly when you were getting faster speeds on a different ISP.

The amount downloaded between midnight and 8am is dropping day by day! I have certainly noticed a dropoff in August. If you can reach the 75 gig monthly free limit between midnight and 8am in a month let me know!

Torrent seems to be a way to make that broadband pipe last a little longer without committing further expenditure for new signups !

Do I hear IHUG, Orcon, Worldxchange clunk ....\\

I dunno about you guys but I just recently moved (well actually got it on our second line still keeping Xtra for comparison) to Xnet and have found a MASSIVE speed increase.

I took this screenshot while downloading a torrent at 5.30 (peak time) and look at the speeds! wouldnt get anywhere near this on Xtra.

I know that this isn't after 12am but still

Xnet's Bandwidth hits the **** fan every night after 12 if your on the Torrent Plan or not. Their other plan gets affected by this WAY too much and these people (including myself) shouldnt have to put up with it. If you go on the Torrent plan its obvious speeds for you should be bad because you are on this plan.

Recently sent a complaint to Xnet about these midnight lag issues and they seem to not care as we haven't had a reply for over a week now.

I wish they would stop treating their customers like they know nothing about internet and didnt make stupid plans that ruin the people that dont Torrent.

I'm in Palmerston North within 1.5Km from the exchange and have the same problem with Xnets international speeds after midnight and even up unitl 5am, I'm not on there torrent plan. Xnet have the worst customer service we had really bad national speeds for months that even affected our voip big time and even with my constant nagging to Xnet nothing came of it, I made a complaint to TDR and magicly heard back from xnet within 24 hours despite the fact I had sent 2 email complaints in one month. We often get faster international upload speeds e.g. 200kb Down & 300kb Up

My friend who is local is with Xtra and doesnt have any problems, which I know its xnets flaut anyway but it just shows even though Telecom are the 'worst ISP' atleast they maintain fair bandwith. sometimes it comes down to Quality not Quantity!

Xnet dont deserve my custom and wont be getting it in another month,

Im just confused, in another thread there was talk about everyone compeating for the same bandwidth with no QOS or Deep packet inspection going on, yet i noticed tonight that youtube goes slower than a constipaited dog in the grass and my utorrent is doing a nice 300-380k/s
It seems to me like youtube is limmited to around 50k/s and that aint enuff to stream it smoothly

personaly i dont care about the speed all that much, for the ammount i am paying its the best deal around, i just think its fishy that all the websites load very slow but I can still easily pull over ... 450k/s now at 3am on utorrnt (yes, encryptions on!) and youtube is still slow like its limmited or something, maybe its there servers i dont know :)

its just whack I tell ya, WHACK!
