I may not love Sky but neither do I want to see the company go bust, that's a whole lot of people out of work and potentially a much worse situation for consumers.

I don't think anyone here wants to see Sky go bust. I certainly don't. Some of us just wish they would up their game.

There are comments in this thread that indicate there are people who are gleefully anticipating thier demise and believe it can't happen quick enough. Those people are the ones that hold the (obviously) incorrect assumption that they are being ripped off.

I have no time for this level of ignorance personally. There are a huge number of us who would be severely disadvanted by the end of Sky.

I hope they can find a way to optimize their offering to lower their prices, but at $3 a day, which is less than a cup of coffee, it's not a terrible value, if you watch some of the content.

A start would be fairer content pricing - Sport should cost a lot more than they charge for it. Basic (given the crappy bitrates, the Sport subsidy everyone pays and endless repeats) should cost less. HD should not be an addon charge - if they adjusted the packages, build the cost into the sports/movies packages (after all, you don't need the HD ticket for One, Two and Three do you? - prime?).

Never mind repricing the packages.. DITCH them. entirely, sports included. Let me pay for the couple of channels I like at a few $ each rather than $50 for basic and dozens of channels I don't. Let me just pick and choose what sports I want.. Personally I don't care about tennis, golf, NRL, etc etc.. I'd much rather be able to pay a fraction just for super rugby and all blacks games and no other sports.

I don't want Sky to die but I share the discontent of those who do. I resent being treated like advertising fodder and I am sick to death of the backward tech, pointless promos and endlessly recycled programming. I don't think Sky treats its paying customers very respectfully and that is where a lot of the gleeful anticipation of their demise comes from.

Press article today shows how the PPV cost for the McGregor fisty is a bargain for us here (somehow). $40NZ vs $100US. That minority fanbase shall be sitting quiet in corner if correct I suspect.

Of course the Duco events are a different kettle.

/agree. A lot of the channels on Sky aren't originated by Sky so I don't know how much control there is over things like number of ad breaks or repetition of content on the satellite platform but I cannot imagine this is an issue that is localized to NZ so I'm hoping Discovery etc. are able to evolve. Of course as we've seen there isn't a largemargin and if broadcasters lose out on advertising revenue, that loss will have to be made up somewhere money-mouth

I also would be really interested to see some hard numbers on exactly what a Sports subscription would cost if it wasn't subsidized and can't help but wonder if it might be in Sky's interest to do so even if it meant having to drop some of the lesser watched sports and consequentially opening up a faux competition.

Edited for typos.

I also do not wish Sky to die, but rather perhaps learn and reshape so it can continue. But Sky's desire to dominate NZ in a global market is not positive for their future.

Evolving technology has allowed pirating, but this same technology can be used in positive way by content providers.

Whatever happens in little old NZ, the content owners will eventually dictate how their content is delivered...eg Spotify and Netflix seems to be the way.

When I was with Sky and got movies/sport and  premium content like GoT it was way more than $3/day.

I couldn't care less whether Sky dies or not.

The content won't go away and it's a rapidly evolving space with many actual and potential providers. If Sky goes under, others will pick up the content and try and service the market.

If Sky gets its act together, offers good value for money and remains profitable and in business, great.

If it doesn't and goes under........ Meh! (shrugs)

Yep, its no biggie. If they do go under, then others will pick up sport, be billed the same by the sports owners, and we will continue on with the same sports funding model in disguise

If Sky went into liquidation or fire sale we will end up with an offshore replacement or ownership. The NZ market is a rounding error compared to offshore markets and will not get priority. We could well be worse off by quite a bit.

I see sky the same way I see trademe.  They have been a monopoly here for years, charging whatever they wished because they had the numbers and no real competition.  Now we have netflix and other streaming people coming to compete with sky and we have Amazon (probably) coming to compete with trademe.

I dislike both companies because of how they charged people so much for so many years, so yeah I cant wait for them to go bust and bugger off.

MightyApe are ones I hope stay around when amazon come, they dont overcharge, they are competitive and have a great service.

No monopoly.

If you have NF and change to Sky to watch the same stuff, no, if you have Sky change to NF to watch the same stuff, no.

It'd cost me a lot more in individual season passess from sports providers (F1, Indy, V8s, Super Rugby, International Rugby, All Blacks - you better believe that won't be bundled cheaply - plus the ability to watch Warriors, NPC and other international sports e.g. Steven Adams games) than Sky does. By all means moan about Sky if you watch literally one thing, but once you start following three different sports (or comps that would be separated out) it all adds up pretty quickly.

I think it’s the way sky ‘forces’ people to buy a multiple package (that effectively makes the average Joe sponsor all the sports) that most people are objecting to. This is why their ‘basic’ package cost so much too...

I believe if they didn't aggregate it across the subs, they wouldn't have enough capital to actually compete on some of the sports... Its a tactical decision on their part to force subsidisation of the sports channels for Skys benefit so they can bid higher or bid for more sports.

I agree. The thing is that these online providers are likely going to have to put their prices up in the future, to be sustainable long term. Who knows if they are actually making a profit at the moment, or going all out for growth. So if someone has to buy services from 3-5 different providers to get all the content they want, it is likely people will have to pay more than they are paying a regular paytv provider. At the moment, if you are buying from several streaming providers, you are likely paying twice for the same content, as many have the same content on them. One problem with traditional paytv providers is really people getting instant access to content via apps, and casting full HD or 4k content to a tv,  which is where many are lagging.
