Sky Deals thread. I pay $50 for Basic, Sport, HD, MySky. Maybe @networkn has another addon like SOHO?

As the UK has shown, competition in major sports causes all sorts of problems.  The EPL in the UK is split amongst two providers.. When it was all Sky, you paid a single fee for the sports channels... then regulators came in and forced the EPL to be split and Setanta won part of the games; now you had to pay AND setanta for that content and a price more than before, and no guarantee that Setanta would show your team playing... Now BBC sport has even more and charges more the price for EPL in the UK has increased a lot.  Competition is good when the there is more than one supplier; all that Sky, BBC etc. are in terms of sports are resellers and with a single supplier behind them there is no real competition just a pseudo, fake competition. 

 

I wonder how the merger would affect the post Optus deal?  I suspect they tried to get with a broadband provider to reduce their costs after 2019 so they can drop satellite and go fibre all the way.... As an separate media company they probably would have to pay for their content to be distributed if not partnered with a telco.

I assume it will go ahead so we can have lively discussions around what might happen, so if you want to treat it in a hypothetical sense for now? (sorry if this sounds angry its not meant to)



Probably not much point in wasting time discussing something that obviously now hasn't been approved. I didn't think it would as NZ is such a small market, and from what I could see the merger wouldn't be be an advantage to consumers. The thing is that the media seemed to think that this time it was likely.

Sports seem to be the big issue for the comcom...its also a big issue for Sky with non Sky Sports subscribers subsidizing this. Maybe key national sports should go back to being broadcast free to air. Dont some major western countries have this in place?

 

Sky over the last 10 years has done nothing to help themselves, they have continually upset their customer base with a series of price increases and failed technology launches. 

 

They need new leadership at the top and quickly, and to become more innovative with their plans.

 

 

Do you want the people who are watching the sports to pay for it or do you want the Government to pay for it?

 

Because if they go to FTA then the taxpayer will be paying for them.

 

 

 

 

Who pays for FTA sport in Ozz ??

 

 

 

 

Commercial Channels mostly but some on ABC or SBS.

 

However they have more than 1 commercial channel. I can't really see MediaWorks paying 200+ million a year for TV rights in NZ.

I see in the news reports on the Herald, John Fellet looks like he is even grumpier than his normal "sparking" demeanour...time for a radical rethink of the business model at Sky HQ methinks...! 

 

Subscribers dropping, investors running for the hills, customer service in disarray, package inflexibility, shaking their existing customers upside down for every last cent (although Sky call it 'upselling")....Sky very quickly doesn't look to be in such good shape...

Its the same as it was last year and next year. Subscriber numbers are falling, by small amounts, but it is significant. What I don't get is the never-ending comparisons with Netflix and other SVOD. Basic is a perfectly relevant member of Pay TV, if they removed the sports subsidy and made it $20. There is very very little overlap with NF, LB, Neon.

 

So its ONLY about sport. Whoever provides sport will have to do what Sky does, be forced to pay a great deal for it. There is no getting around that. Overseas sports providers charge a similar amount to NZ$60, which is what Fanpass costs and what Sport would probably cost if the subsidy as taken off Basic. If Netflix took over sport in NZ from Sky they would have to charge that. If they took half, it would be charged at lower rates, as would Sky, but many of us would need both, the UK situation.

I see a lot of the same old cliche phrases being wheeled out even though they are years out of date and now patently incorrect. It seems to me that some people want to be "included" in the discussion, and are basically regurgitating stuff said at a bar by a mate 5 years ago which "seems to ring true". 

 

It happens all the time when internet speeds are discussed, and people out of touch keep going on about NZ's third world internet when in fact we have EXCELLENT speeds and fantastic pricing. (Yes even compared to the US where I have spent a fair bit of time over the years).

Odd, as the old Telstra Clear system appears to have the password stored in plain text (As evidenced by the CSR reading back my password to me.  *sigh*

 

 

 

 

it was for a hacked laptop of mine, got locked out of it by some little ass, so I wiped the laptop but could not get the email to work without the password. I could not remember. So on hold I went.

I am not sure I fully agree with the decision. This could well see both being sold. If they end up in equity companies hands  NZ will be the worse off as they are notorious for wrecking companies.

 

 

The concern seems to be that Voda will have too much influence over non Voda users. Companies merge to share and reduce costs. Fellett has now said that he will be working with all telcos, that is a benefit.

 

Sky, once the Optus contract is renewed at a much lower cost, or they go via broadband instead and dump satellite, will need to restructure the business, that will reduce costs.

 

Until then, stick with it, no real choice.

 

 

 

 

Spark had a relationship with Sky but walked away and have declined offers since. It will be interesting going forward as Sky needs to do a lot changes to it's service delivery model to remain competitive

 

 

Didn't Telecom (nee spark) walk away to start Lightbox? I believe that was the reason, could be wrong

You just have to look at the press reports which factually explain the situation Sky are rapidly finding themselves, in terms of share price plummeting and falling subscribers.

 

The emotion you speak of is again factual accounts based on the customer "experience" Sky account holders post on here and Facebook.

So true about Netflix.

 

If you were going to compare Netflix and other SVOD to Sport on SKY it would be either all the games shown one after the other even though they were played hours or days ago or 5 or 6 hours of live content a week but the ability to watch games from the last 10 years to fill up the rest.

 

The other thing that will happen is that if you like 4 sports say it will be at least $20 per sport per month and you might still only get a subset of the sport.

Its not factual, its emotive. The numbers are there. Subscribers dropping due to SVOD, even though SVOD doesnt overlap Sky. Big numbers? No, little numbers. They have had over 800,000 subscribers for a long time, they still do. Yes, the numbers are dropping, slowly.

 

Rapidly finding themsleves? No, this has been happening when SVOD arrived here, slowly but surely, its not new

 

Customer Experience?  Ive dealt with them, never an issue. There will always be issue with any company, squeaky wheel syndrome. Facebook? Ok  Stuff?  ok

 

Share price has been steady, it dropped after the merger news, a lot. Expected

 

Sky is very sticky, it will help to dump satellite, cost wise, cannot do that yet. If they do, and "get with the play and stop using 1980's technology" then users will be getting an internet experience not a satellite experience, not ideal, then they will complain. 

 

I have Sky, I'm not a fan, it works well for me. Its not rorting. So, Im fine with that
