I read an interesting post on reddit today saying that Chinese authorities have translated the WHO announcement in a way that deliberately plays down the severity of the statement. E.g. calling it, "an internationally followed sudden public sanitary incident".

It took WHO 4 months to declare a public emergency for SARS, 1 month for this.

IIRC the WHO decision is not based about China its about the rest of the globe. A country , in this case, China is responsible for its own issues, WHO is concerned about the rest of the world, and they stated that I am sure. Translation isn't always easy. We have words they dont have a direct equivalent

There have been "partial border closures" - ie Vietnam have stopped issuing visas on arrival for Chinese nationals, and closed land borders - presumably if you already have a visa you can still get in (ie by air). Philippines -  no visas on arrival to be issued, Mongolia has closed all border crossings, Kazakhstan - closed borders and stopped issuing (all?) visas, Nepal - sealed borders, Russia - suspended use of E-Visas, and have banned Chinese tour groups.

The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) has confirmed that a novel coronavirus diagnostic test is now available in New Zealand.

https://www.esr.cri.nz/home/about-esr/media-releases/test-to-detect-novel-coronavirus-available-in-new-zealand/

24 hour turnaround from when samples are received.

ESR will also offer support to other laboratories when developing their own testing capabilities. (this should reduce transport delay to test samples)

grimwulf: - and it's really interesting that the discourse, even from our own health department is now on whether there's an 'outbreak' here rather than single infections...

I'm not sure what you are taking about. There is not one single case in NZ at this time.

I don't think there's any need for that.  It's been declared a global emergency, and I'm not seeing doomsday predictions and conspiracy theory here.

WyleECoyoteNZ: I'm a little surprised this didn't get more coverage, assuming that the numbers are correct

https://www.google.co.nz/amp/s/nypost.com/2020/01/27/five-million-residents-left-wuhan-before-coronavirus-lockdown-mayor-reports/amp/

Population is 11M,  5 left leaving 9 behind, something is wrong.

It's an interesting stat but there is nothing particularly unique about this. If a hypothetical outbreak occured in Auckland it's not hard to imagine a similar proportion leaving the area to stay in holiday homes and with relatives in other cities.

Add to that China's previous experience with SARS and it's even more understandable.

The latest official report from China (translated by Google)

At 04:00 on January 30, 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 1982 new confirmed cases, 157 severe cases, and 43 new deaths (42 cases in Hubei Province, Heilongjiang Province). 1 case in the province), 47 new cases were cured and discharged, and 4812 new cases were suspected.
As of 2400 on January 30, the National Health and Health Commission has received a total of 9692 confirmed cases (31 cases in Sichuan Province have been confirmed), and 1,527 severe cases have been reported. A total of 213 deaths and 171 cases were cured and discharged, with a total of 15,238 suspected cases.
At present, 113579 close contacts have been traced (21 cases in Beijing were reduced by nuclear medicine). 4201 people were released from medical observation on that day, and a total of 102427 people were receiving medical observation.
A total of 28 confirmed cases were reported from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan: 12 from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, 7 from the Macao Special Administrative Region, and 9 from Taiwan.

Edit: "21 cases in Beijing were reduced by nuclear medicine" - I have no idea what that's supposed to mean, but seems to be too specific for a google translate glitch.

That is great news, I read a story in the herald on Wednesday that a DHB nurse told the owner of a home stay it would take up to 2 weeks for the test results to come back and if the student could return back to the home stay until the results came in.

I believe its not the English translation that's an issue, but the Chinese being used.

I couldn't copy and paste the post from reddit, I don't think Geekzone liked the Chinese characters, but here's a link to it

I agree, although the logistics would seem rather difficult. Yes not surprising many took off. My wife is Chinese , and from Wuhan as it happens, and here in ChCh, she tells me that many are staying home, not going to the many reasons they have for a eating night out, they are super cautious.

Scientists say that cheap face masks don't provide protection against the corona virus.

Air tight masks that seal the face and goggles might provide protection.   Assuming you also wash your face and hands after removing the mask/goggles.

It makes me laugh looking at all the sheep wearing cheap face masks in public places.

Thanks, my wife is Chinese, and even though her English is excellent, there are words and meanings that don't have a very good equivalent. The word sanitary probably has a different feel to it there than here, that type of thing. So we take our feel for the word and assume they are lessening the magnitude, etc. Even though they may not be. Yes, and potentially they may want to play it down, so hard to know. But from what I see, Chins is taking it very seriously indeed IMHO

There is no need to refer to those folk as sheep. Many wear them if they are sick with colds etc for they are OK in limiting the spread from them. Others maybe wearing them due to severe allergies etc. I have a suppressed immune system and wear them during the cold season or high pollen season. I was advised to by my medical professionals and are many others with my condition and similar. Am I a sheep no.

Edit: yes I will be buying a higher level of mask should we start getting cases here along with other precautions.
