JPNZ:

Without the South Island and the cook strait cable I'd love to see how the North Island would survive the pretty much immediate catastrophe of running out of power.

Totally worth it to avoid buying two boats.

Actually more power has gone south than north some years. And with Climate change those lakes are not filling properly.

But either way, partisanship like this is BS and achieves zero.

Other countries import power. It should be straightforward.

But those countries aren't a 1000 miles from nowhere.

Singapore is looking at importing electricity from Solar farms in Australia via undersea cable.

I gather Farmers in South Island are concerned about getting their goods to the large population of North Island, as well as stock transfers etc.
Other business making products where export to North Island a major market also expressing concern.

Fearful Cook Strait freight transport sector asks what next for $15 billion-a-year cargo route?

Australia had to deal with cost blowouts from Finnish shipbuilder due to post covid inflation and wars.
Delays shopping around then back to original builder at higher price.
Then a $80M AU payment on top to keep shipbuilder suffering financial problems alive.

The Tasmanian terminal expansion for these ship blew out from $90M AU to $375M AU .

Its not just us, world economics changed, cheap capital dried up, profit before growth, and costs increase.

In the end they just knuckled down concerned about life of 25Y old ferries.
( Hah they should have seen when ours were built ).
Plus potential loss of 350M AU business growth for every year of delay for Tasmania.

Our seaway is tougher, history of 'vomit comet' fast ferries, not just killed by speed limits in sounds.
They could not operate in 4m or more seas that happen fairly often.
Comfort for passengers in many conditions poor thus 'vomit comet' moniker.

Then we are looking at a terminal next to a major intercontinental fault on the ring of fire.
I gather original scope also had room for Bluebridge etc too in the spirit of fair competition.
First step would have been to see what could be cut on the terminal not immediate stop for ferries.

Wellington business already reeling from major 'overnight' loss thousands of jobs, apparently ACT wants to cut even more.

ACT have a plan....blame the increased unemployed on the unemployed, close food banks, etc etc etc and then channel that money into charter schools.

I read today that Auckland City Mission's foodbank funding is being cut, so they will have to reduce food parcels by 50%

so all the "front line" positions that were not going to be reduced, these people are now doing more "back office" stuff so the number of actual useful hours for frontline staff has reduced...Meanwhile Act have millions to waste on their school ideology.

As for the poor, I guess its a case of "Let them eat cake", far more important to let Brian Tamaki get his snout into the trough.

Where would we import from? Australia? What would be straightforward about that?

The implication is that if the South Island decided to be independent, then energy would be a natural export product to the New Zealand North Island Republic.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the argument that Wellington public servants should be considered sacred cows because it might have a negative impact on businesses in Wellington if they're subjected to the same reality the rest of the country has to deal with.

Exactly. At the moment my son is being helped by a section of the Education department. The person helping my son and their manager are safe but the managers above are losing their jobs so guess who has to carry their work load? No use saying anything as the current Government don't want to know unless it involves saving money.
