Could I ask what Vodafone's definition of "congestion" is? There does appear to be at least some form of congestion impacting Vodafone's network, as also indicated by the past two months' TrueNet reports.

https://truenet.nz/story/2017/04/march-2017-urban-broadband-report
https://truenet.nz/story/2017/05/april-2017-urban-broadband-report

Heck, the former TrueNet article's subtitle is even Vodafone's Homegrown Congestion. :P Take a look at the NZ page speed graph in that article in particular. Vodafone dips to ~2/3 of maximum performance at peak hour.

Yeah, but the TrueNet reports are complaining about congestion in webpage download speeds. The main complaints in this thread are about speedtest speed drops. The April TrueNet report states that FibreX drops to 93% of max at peak time - which doesn't sound anything like the major drops that some of us are having. I'm starting to think that the issues are localised. Just because it LOOKS like congestion, it doesn't mean it IS congestion.

but if it appears at certain parts of the day, say 3pm to 10pm every day then....

....then it might be other things. It seems clear from TrueNet's figures that it isn't affecting everyone. They show a 7% peak hour average drop. Some people here are seeing a 99% peak hour drop. That implies that it could be affecting just a street or a small radius.

Just throwing other ideas out there...

Maybe it's throughput-related packet-loss.

Electricity usage goes up between 3pm and 10pm. Maybe it's a power company street transformer that is squegging interference into a loose coax connector. The more load, the more interference, the slower the speed.

Ludicrous idea - but you see my point - just because it's time of day, it doesn't mean it HAS to be congestion. In fact, the TrueNet speed results imply that there isn't a general issue with congestion at the speedtest level.

I really don't see how truenet can test a 1Gbps properly. As Neil has demonstrated plenty of times, it's how you hold your tongue.

Not a great experience then.  I had an outage on Sunday morning after 1am that went on for some time but everything is back to normal now it seems.  I have just sent a message to Mike Hayles to see if it was part of a maintenance schedule.  If it was it would be nice if they published known outages (maybe they already do and I just need educating)

My service is back up again but speeds are all over the place, ranging from 152mbps down to 406mbps down. The Upload is reasonable consistent at around 95mbps. For an off peak period on a "Gigabit" service the results are still far from acceptable.

@MikeHales the connection at my home has been stable over the last 24 hours however the performance is still way short of the plan I am on (Gigabit) I am averaging circa 250mbps download and the maximum I have achieved is around 404mbps download. The upload is averaging 90mbps which is acceptable.

Thanks for the info, will get a line check carried out. I know there was a physical break on your Node but throughput worth a look.

Talkiet:

As an example, I have 2 Fibre Max lines here and on either I can get 940Mbps+ on Speedtest to our Chch Speedtest server, 920ish to Wellington, and 890ish to Auckland. I can also download a single thread file from a Chch server at a "real world" (Size of file/time taken to download) speed of 112Megabytes/sec (896mbit).

If you're downloading at 112Megabytes/sec on a "Gigabit" service, then I reckon you're seeing the benefit of quite a bit of compression in the software you're using to do the data transfer.

In the 'olden days' we always used to use a guideline of "calculate with 10 bits/character, and expect a TCP/IP overhead burden of at least 20%"
On that basis, 112MB/sec is the equivalent of a raw rate of about 1380Mb/sec or ~1.4Gb/sec.

So at least a 25% compression of the data on-the-fly

Nope. File is an uncompressable (checked) random file created with urandom... (eg. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/33629/how-can-i-populate-a-file-with-random-data )

This was the download...

You'll note it was a single threaded download to /dev/null (We're not testing file systems here) and the file on the remote machine was on a ramdisk...

(As it happens this particular run was 109MB/sec average and 111MB/sec at the end of the test... I have had other tests higher (112 may have been peak, but I have has a 110 average ) but don't have a screenshot.

Also note the file is not actually a zip file... I just renamed it [whatever].zip to make it easier for testing downloads on a windows machine.

I'm probably more in tune with the 'olden days' than most on here - my first modem wasn't quite a 300 acoustic - but it was a 1200/75... I've had extremely extensive experience testing throughput, ramp rate etc... I'm 100% confident in the test validity.

And nothing in the area on the network status page. No surprises there though. Not sure it is used nearly as much as it needs to be. Wouldn't be a good look to publish too many I imagine.

My wife was saying tonight that maybe it's getting to the time we considered changing to a UFB provider. We are however on contract.
