PolicyGuy:

100 watts load = ~2.4kWh/day = ~72kWh/month (30 days)
$25 / 72 = 34.72cents/kWh

If you're paying 35+ cents / unit, I think you should strongly consider changing suppliers: https://www.powerswitch.org.nz/

I'm on a 'low usage' tariff -lower daily charge, higher unit cost - and I'm paying 30.15 cents/unit.
If I had Starlink, it would cost me $21.71/month before discounts, under $20 after discounts.
[I won't be getting Starlink, my UFF fibre to the home is extremely adequate for my needs :)]

I'm on a low usage rate too. That extra load represents more than 10% of the 8000KWh annual threshold to stay at the low usage rate. I'm concerned about creeping over the threshold, which would raise the power cost considerably.

I'm much less inclined to actually get Starlink after reading that article, especially since Vodafone recently reduced what they call peak time for RBI to just 5pm to midnight, and I was able to switch to a plan that is cheaper than Starlink beta with unlimited off-peak data and enough peak data for my purposes. With Starlink monthly cost looking to be more than I am now paying, and no longer feeling a data cap crunch, I don't see as much of a reason to sink the $1000 into hardware that may be unusable in a couple more years. The comparison with RBI looked more possibly in Starlink's favour when they first announced the NZ beta.

Well derived, though $0.35/kWh is pretty normal (even cheap) for Northland and Kerikeri area - https://www.glimp.co.nz/which-new-zealand-city-pays-the-most-for-electricity

Hopefully power consumption will go down significantly.  (Starlink are planning to provide an optional battery backup for phone service, so there is some incentive for them to reduce power usage)

Starlink engineers said, “We have a couple of items in progress to further reduce power consumption. We are working on software and network updates to allow your Starlink to go into a deeper power savings mode to drop power consumption while still remaining connected to the network. Power reductions are a key item we are focusing on for the future.”

Thanks for checking, must be connecting to the Cromwell ground station. when they get Hinds up and running it should improve latency and satellite connectivity for us in Canterbury (that being said both are pretty good as they are)

Interesting, I wonder how the Awarua SGS ground station is going?

Do we know if coverage has been expanded at all to the North Island? Given that we have 3 built ground stations already.

No sign of North Island coverage yet on anywhere I follow.  Though it seems imminent based on ground stations etc.  The estimate was mid-to-late 2021 - though some places have had similar estimates and got theirs sooner.  Also, Australia and mid-USA have coverage which should make all NZ 'easy' :)

I gave the Whangarei Flying Club the coordinates of the Starlink ground stations, and it seems they've found Puwera already :)

Please give them a 'like' on Facebook, or if you live close enough consider them for a trial-flight - its a bargain price and friendly group.

Just gobsmacked how fast those satelites move over the sky and how quickly the status quo changes. Truly amazing tech!
Looks like the reason my dish isn't in the post yet is that there is no ground station anywhere near Welly. All goes via CHCH.

Another North Island pre-order here.  Check your Starlink obstructions on the app, I have noticed that my circle now points north-west, as opposed to south-west initially.  Given the close proximity of the three North Island ground stations, I'm inclined to believe that users in the North Island may have their terminals facing north.

I'm near Warkworth. I think my circle was slightly east of north when I first tried it and now is more exactly north and closer to straight up than it was.

Interesting, looks like its all ready to go in the North Island then.  I wonder what the hold up is?

Well there are pretty bad chipset shortages at the moment causing very long lead times on all sorts of networking equipment right now. Could be related.
