So I found myself becoming an owner-occupier of a CBD apartment that was a serviced apartment. Everything is nice, except for the fact that Chorus is now claiming that there is insufficient line capacity to even bring in a standard landline/DSL service for Internet. Okay, so I went to the body corporate AGM and learned that they've been trying to get in touch with every single telecommunications company out there (Chorus, Telecom, Vodafone) to get more lines running in so at least we (the actual residents) standard Internet service. The apartment block has its own node supposedly, and line trace from various ISPs have confirmed that the unit I am in does have a line, but then Chorus said that they need building owners to bring in more lines. Yeah, what?

So someone is clearly not informed properly here, and this has been going on for months now, and none of us have even a basic service. Only service is FreedomInternet which is over unsecured wifi with very flaky speeds, and down more often than the worst ISP's I've been with. Not to mention not using a public IP address, but I digress...

Not sure if anyone here can bring me information or contact the right people to maybe speed this up, but not getting proper Internet access is really driving me nuts.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Wow, In this day and age.
Really cant do a whole lot. I think the appt owners need to speak directly with chorus and get them to extend their network to the apartment. Maybe just put its own xDSL ALCATEL 7302 in the bottom. Might cost about 200,000.

Email me "pl at telecom.co.nz" and I can find out the score on Monday via a Chorus investment manager I know. A home phone number plus address and building name would be helpful in the email.

Bugger, that was my favorite hotel to go to whenever i visit auckland. Though they did have crap expensive internet - something like $20 for 1 hour or 300mb of 256k

Basically if it was run like a hotel, they probably only needed 10 or 20 lines bought into the building which their pbx would then split to the rooms.
Now as apartments, the people who deal with subdivisions at chorus i think would be the ones to talk to about a build out. I believe though that it would be at the buildings expense.

I am however pretty sure there is FX fibre coming into that building.

Is the whole building now owned as apartments, or is part of the building still run as the hotel?

I would be happy to talk to your corporate body to suggest some options that dont involve chorus if they are having problems with them.

In the mean time, have a chat to woosh wireless about their wimax service

I think only part of the complex has been converted so at the moment it's mixed use. I would rather give a bit more time for Chorus to sort this out and maybe even enable UFB in place of that. Will have to see what happens over the next couple weeks as more information and options flow in.

There are quite a few wireless options for cbd auckland. Experience won't be awesome, but better than nothing.

Wow, right across from Airedale St... They probably have a 50pair so only a few apartments missing out.

CityLink has fibre right outside, so shouldn't cost more than $3000 to get it into the building if they want a FTTB topology, plus 100M switches and phone equipment in the basement. Perhaps an aggregation switch designed for apartment buildings like this Ethernet Aggregation ONU. I would expect you would have Cat5e links good enough for 100base Ethernet through to your apartment.




Time to find a new industry!

That's what I hope can happen, I really don't mind having FTTB right now because anything is better than a wireless connection. That said, I don't think we have ethernet jacks to units, at least not to my one so I don't think they have them, but standard phone line jacks are available right in the living room and the bedrooms.

Thanks for all your answers everyone, and hopefully plambrechtsen will be able to get some answers from someone who knows more before further steps are taken.

As pointed out by RayTaylor - this is a job for the Chorus subdivision group.

The developer who changed the use from hotel to apartments should have worked with the Chorus subdivision team to sort out additional network requirements.

The original hotel would have had a single "address" for all the rooms and a single connection (for their PBX & Broadband).  A new cable entry into the building may be required and additional demarcation points may be required.

Part of the work we do is create the new address locations within the property - i.e. Apt 1, Apt 2, Penthouse A, Penthouse B etc. so that when a resident calls their ISP the address shows up in our network database.

If this work is not done by the developer, then the resident ends up having to sort this out individually which is less than satisfactory.

Get the developer or the Body Corporate to contact the Chorus subdivision group tsg@chorus.co.nz to fix this properly.
