I think the general current assumption should be that if it has been 3 or more minutes since the previous event, expect a new event at any time.
The novelty of events is wearing off somewhat after the first two years of events every few months, now they are constant.
I don't expect advance notice of events that last a week - you can dip in and out at whim and you're generally not missing anything exclusive (I think only one event had an exclusive move with Grass Knot for Breloom). I do expect advance notice of something that requires me to attend during a three-hour period that has no flexibility and has limited-edition content. For example, a three-hour raid afternoon, community day, or special limited research event.
Evolved my 98% lucky Meditite to a Medicham and gave it a second move so now it has Dynamic Punch and Power-Up Punch. It's going to be a beast in PVP.

Players; how was Rayquaza special weekend?
In preparation I spent around 800k dust, taking the 4 Mamoswines I had to Level 40 (and giving them all a second charge move)
They came in very handy as my first raid gave me a 98% (14 attack however) and then a raid on Monday evening gave me a perfect. I now have something to poor any rare candies I receive into ...
Glad that we seem to have also received more than 30 seconds notice on the next event - starts tomorrow at 9am
And I have to keep on remembering that Community Day is on Saturday this time around compared to the Sunday for the last few
I got 2 96%ers, one with 15 attack. But then I only did two raids yesterday morning as I was doing my main hobby all weekend.
Actually barely played all weekend because a young couple from my raid crew bought the house next door and we were helping them clean it prior to moving in next week (they're adamant they'll have the furniture in before Community Day starts). It had been a rental for two years and even though it was an older couple, good heavens what a mess. Fly spits all over the ceiling and walls (we had to mop them), stains all over the carpet, and it took me over an hour to scrub the burned-on gunk off the ceramic cooktop. I even had to take to the kitchen wall with a scrubbing brush. So we only made it out for an hour on Saturday evening. Nevertheless, I was happy - got a 98% (15/14/15), which I had failed to do in a month and 60 raids the first time around. Also scored an EX pass for the first round of Deoxys Defence Forme.
I'm looking forward to the Equinox event purely to stock up on good Treecko for Saturday (and Turtwig, for further down the track). I'm a bit sad there's no special bonus like extra catch dust. I really thought we'd get Shaymin special research and Leafeon/Glaceon (spring arriving/winter leaving) or maybe the return of the flower crown Eevees, but at the moment it seems all a bit lacklustre.

I gotta say I was impressed that the Community Day new time zone spread seemed to work without too much incident - I was expected server issues, massive downtime and no response from Niantic until well after the event was over.
My shiny haul wasn't as big as previous community days - however that is not always a bad thing; it did take just over an hour to get my first, but it turned out to be a 96% .. I figured I would never get anything better, so evolved it all the way.
Liking the announcement of the 9 hour research window - I figure it will take me approx 4-5 hours to clear the flat parts of Dunedin CBD, and then once done I can go searching of more research via car .. and actually play at home this time as well. With such a big window, it also removes the rush rush rush nature of these - collecting the tasks, catching the correct Pokemon all while managing bag space. I "may" have to purchase more storage space this time, as my Pokeball situation last time got rather dire in the closing 30 minutes. I also may finally get a decent Lotad!
I managed 3 shiny Treecko. While I was driving home at about 5:58pm I was stopped at a traffic light and a Treecko popped up next to me so I tapped on it. Another shiny! I was going to wait until I stopped again before I tried to catch it and then I thought what if it runs at 6pm? So I stabbed at the screen to throw a ball and managed to hit the exit icon. Bye bye shiny Treecko... 🙁
Oh, that's frustrating! If it's any consolation, if you'd have caught it after 6pm, it would likely have turned non-shiny (the shiny odds revert to normal when the event ends).
I got nine shiny Treecko, although the overall spawn rates seemed lower. My sister had a cold and didn't feel like walking so we didn't do quite as much pavement-pounding as usual. Nonetheless, I did get a 98% (77CP, lol) and I also got a couple of good IV luckies from post-event trading with my son. I was well pleased with how smoothly the game ran, despite a few moments of spinning ball and a couple of "failed to install the module" errors. Even when Aussie's eastern coast joined us at 5pm there was no noticeable difference. It'll be interesting to see if things change with a more popular Pokemon, but it does open things up for Niantic to be far more flexible with timing now, rather than being locked to only Sunday to put us last, and NZ being locked to late afternoon because other countries in our region are so many hours behind us.
The Equinox event just ended and I can't say I've seen much of a difference in spawns, given I live in a grass biome anyway. I thought the event was disappointing, with no catch/XP/candy bonuses, no new Pokemon, and the only shiny spawned mainly while I was asleep. They could at least have had Solrock and Lunatone together for the event to give people the chance at both shinies. I'm looking forward to this weekend's limited research. "Pokemon that are affected by the weather" hopefully includes all the variations of Castform so that we can finally get a snowy one here in Auckland. I like the longer timeframe too. Next weekend is allegedly (if leaks are to be believed) a special raid day for Alakazam. I won't be going all out for that one unless it gets a move that makes it useful. The following weekend will likely be Community Day, as I expect they'll want to avoid holding that over the Easter holiday. I assume some kind of Easter event will occur during the second half of April and then we'll have the Earth Day rewards. I really hope we finally get the Gen 4 ground types alongside that. It's been over five months since the ghosts came out. Even Gen 3 wasn't drawn out this long and that had way more Pokemon in it.
The change to Giratina Origin's moves is interesting. I'll certainly be keen to get a few good ones. Nice to have it as a strong ghost type since there are so many strong dragons already in the game. It does slightly dethrone Mewtwo, but Mewtwo will never not be relevant, it just has company at the top now.

Yeah I thought something happened at the end of the event but I couldn't remember exactly what. Oh well!
I remember on Mareep Day, Griffin only got two shinies and desperately wanted a third so he had one for all three evolutions. He ran down the beach at 5:58 like a maniac shiny checking, clicked on one at the last minute, ran back to me trying to catch it and almost sobbing because he thought it was too late... and then it turned 6:00 and none of the Mareep despawned. Niantic had extended by an hour (although we hadn't seen any communication to advise of that) because of issues right at the start.

Well I wasn't quite at the point of sobbing but I was fuming with myself for the rest of the evening. How could I have been so stupid...
186 Research Tasks completed on Saturday - I ended up walking around Dunedin for 5 hours, covering 25km before getting into the car and heading out to South Dunedin where I picked up a few tasks and then home to Mosgiel where I got quite a few more. Ended up with 11 shiny Lotad and 6 shiny Castform, but the best pickup was a shiny Sandshrew.
Didn't manage to get a perfect Lotad, but did end up with 4x 98% (though the best shiny was a 89%)
My legs really hurt today :-)
Wow, you had insanely good shiny odds for Lotad. My son and I got 1/75 and 1/76 respectively. We only planned on playing for three hours, since we thought the shiny odds would be similar to Clamperl Day, but ended up having to keep playing right until the end in a futile attempt to get more shinies. Ended the day tired and frustrated, partly from bad RNG and partly from disappointment at the abysmal spawn pool we had to catch. Clamperl had some cool rare and evolved forms, but Lotad Day seemed firmly locked to everyday common stuff. Didn't see any of the desirable, evolved, or new cloudy-boosted Pokemon like Ralts, Togetic, Skorupi, Breloom, Combusken. Saw only two Machop, no Meditite and not even any Roselia, which I always look out for in weather boosts because Roserade is so good. The only good points were that the shiny Castform were plentiful and the tasks were easy to complete. I thought Clamperl Day was darn near perfect but Lotad Day was not that much better than Feebas. I thought the longer timeframe was to give people flexibility about when to play but in the end it seemed to disadvantage those who couldn't do the full nine hours.

About 10 tasks done. 1 shiny Lotad for the kid account. None for me. 3 shiny Castform each.
And then to rub it in more, kid account catches a shiny Magikarp today. I am still on 0 with 4236 caught.
Far out - and my son thinks he's hard done by not getting a shiny Swablu after 1400 encounters. Let's cross our fingers for a water event soon so we can top up our shiny Lotad, Magikarp and Feebas (I still don't have one).
