Nothing like a bit of clever marketing to get all us geeks frothing!

(This is the same thing Apple do and many other companies. Announce been-around-for-ages-but-slightly-different-angle products/services as brand new earth shattering.)

jonherries: Since about 2007, we have had naked cable from Telstraclear, which is now $55.95 per month for 20GB.

We also have one of the Netgear "skype phones" although this is slowly being supplanted by idevices.

The Wellington (04) skypein number costs about $100 per year.

I am not sure why this is being pitched as being so revolutionary?

Jon

Skype is far from a carrier grade primary voice line replacement which the Orcon and WxC offerings are.

Skype doesn't support calls to emergency services, and your number is not owned by you (or Skype) which means it could change at any time (as happened in the UK a couple of years ago), and also can't be ported in or out.

Yeah, I'm not sure what RichMS is on about either.  We also have Uniden cordless phones hooked into our ATA, and whether you dial before or after going off-hook, redial works perfectly.  Also, when dialling a number from the phone book (as a speed dial), the tones are sent out to the ATA pretty fast.  I would challenge anybody to dial them that fast with their fingers, so I don't really see the problem here.

If you dial after going offhook, then enter an extenstion number or something, it gets added to what it will redial, sending more digits out than the actual phone number. Perhaps the uniden you have is faster than the one I have, which is pretty slow- probably 5-6 digits a second tops.

5-6 digits a second, yeah, I'd be pretty upset with that slow rate of dialing as well. May I suggest you get an old modem to dial for you (that doesn't honor the min value of 50) and give the command ats11=33.

wired: Is there anywhere I can plug my burglar alarm into?
If not, then I'm out and will stay with the old stuff. Frown

Yes you will be able to. It's funny that there are still so many alarms that are being installed that aren't IP based.

Either way, with the UFB everyone will be forced to shift to this type of technology.

I was saying that the benifit of the integrated orcon device would be the elimination of these annoying delays and slow dialings, whats with the strange suggestions on other workarounds?

+1

How DOES emergency dialling work with VOIP?  my understanding is that it doesnt?  so if everyone goes fibre and VOIP then we have a big problem if for instance the power goes out at night and you then start a fire by tripping over your gas heater and you dont have a mobile phone...

or is there some solution for this?

I also thought NDSL was only available in some areas or has that changed too?

Still I will be very interested to see what orcon pricing will be for this...

Yeah, I know. My suggestion was kind of a joke regarding your suggestion that 5-6 digits a second was too slow, more directed to older geeks who are / were familiar with modem at commands. s11 was the register used to set the dialling speed of the modem when you used the atdt command to dial. I always used s11=33 to make the modem dial fast, real fast.

I was always hoping for a dial the radio station competition where the first caller won something as I knew that I could use the modem to dial faster than pretty much anyone else (most phones back then still used decadic dialling). The only drawback to this plan was the fact that I didn't listen to the radio.

Anyway, back on topic, it's good that voip is becoming more widespread and this sort of device will raise the profile of it to the general public, but, as others have mentioned, not really a big deal.

Personally, I wouldn't want such a large device around the house out on display.

NDSL is available everywhere on telecoms wholesaled network, but its not viable in whopwhop areas where they charge $20 more for it because they can, whereas the PSTN they are forced to sell at the same fixed to cost of living price is not able to be, so if you are in the middle of nowhere then naked is not a viable option being about the same price as featureless PSTN and a wholesale broadband.

I know what you mean, back when ihug was the only option for dialup I had tweeked the hell out of the registers to get it dialing as fast as possible. I recall S11=28 was marginal, 30 was ok, and 0 seconds delay before dialing and a ,3038282 as the number with the , set to really low got it dialing fast, and some tweeks on the registers for busy detection got that working as soon as it heard the tone, since there was no ringing tone when it was going to work, but it did ring before dougal stevenson telling me about overloading.

It seems to break into 2 parts, so the large radio part could be hidden away barring RF range issues. Still, its a pretty average looking phone. Does it even do contact importing from a PC?

richms: Well who uses a cordless phone thatway? its always been dial and then press green on them? otherwise you break the redial and it will dial all the other crap you dial after it gets an answer too.

You and me would be the only two people I know who use a cordless phone this way! Everybody else I know pushes the off hook button then dials the number.

make that  three of us.

I dial the number and then press call. It connects to the base station and starts dialling straight away.

Don't have that problem with my Uniden phone, it just redials the phone number.
