I bet the TEN engines are worth plenty extra now if anybody was lucky enough to be sitting on a couple

Just trying to do some research for my upcoming US trip.

I'm flying out on a 777 to LA on 12th May and due to return 22nd May from Houston on a 787. Having a look at recent flight it doesn't look like this route has had much disruption but I guess I'll just need to cross my fingers?

I think west coast US ports are OK as there is Fiji and Hawaii enroute?

IAH is a Code 2 789 which is unaffected (Trent 1000 TEN engines).

The disruption on both routes has been the swapping out of some IAH flights with a 777, and the change in scheduled times for NZ5/NZ6 so the plane doesn't spend half the day parked up at LAX and now returns almost immediately.

Checks extended to type 'B' engines.  There's 166 of those engines.

I'm off to the US on the weekend, Decided to fly A330 https://www.hawaiianairlines.co.nz/ via Honolulu. Also carefully planned some Australia flights next month via AirNZ 777's.

I was on ZKNZM yesterday from CHC to AKL. First time on a 787. Window seat down the back. Leg room better than Air NZ A320. Seats felt excellent. IFE screen all controlled by touch only - very responsive. Overall very impressed, quiet but not as quiet as an A380. However, I have always had an aisle seat so maybe not fair comparison.

Since I got off NZM at around 1.20 pm yesterday, it's been to Houston and is now mid Pacific on its way back to Auckland!

Here it is at Gate 22A at CHC.  It is really Gate 26 but by opening a corridor it lets domestic passengers use that gate!

Interesting article here in the Seattle Times.

No quick fixes

The impact won’t be short term.

Rolls is returning the repaired engines to airlines with only a temporary fix. A permanent modification won’t be available until the end of the year at the earliest.

“Those engines will have to come back to us when the final fix is available,” said Moore.

Meanwhile, repeated technical problems with another engine — Pratt & Whitney’s Geared Turbofan (GTF), the innovative new design that will power close to half of the Airbus A320neo fleet — have caused Pratt to fall way behind in deliveries, leaving engineless planes to stack up on the ground at Airbus factories.

Obviously none of our mainstream media have picked up on it yet but NZ281 had to return to SIN yesterday after shutting down an engine a couple of hours into the flight. The aircraft is now grounded due to the extra checks now required on the other engine.

They are amazing planes to fly in but really do deserve to be called Nightmareliners now.

Nice graphic but contains some errors. The fan (1) doesn't compress air into the engine it drives air that bypasses the engine.

The turbine (5) drives the compressor (2) and the fan (1). Only the compressor compresses air into the turbine.

Exhaust does not propel the plane although it may help. The bypass air from the fan provides the propulsion.

@sbiddle, I understand you wouldn't have any knowledge of this, but IMHO the cattle class cabin in the 787 is truly hideous. Worse than AirNZ's 777 economy cabin, and much worse than Emirates' economy cabins.

If you have a look on flightradar24 and search on NZ281, it will bring up previous flights and show the one that returned to Singapore. It happened about an hour into the flight. Quite cool because it shows the full outbound and inbound track. This incident was related to oil supply to the engine not the turbine blades but if it was an engine shutdown it still means 2-1=1!

Lol you're right. I have no comment as I haven't flown in economy on the Dreamliner, only PE or BP in my 5 or 6 flights.

While I've read plenty of bad comments I don't think it could be worse than the pre refit 77W economy seats. These were truly horrible, but the new refit seats are apparently better. I haven't however flown in these so can't really comment.
