nofam: Just rang the local vf store for a release date . . .he clearly knew, but want saying.

Any clues at all? EG "Sometime this week"? lol

Nah, tried that, and he just kept saying "check the website" - he was clearly very smug about it, but hey, if that's the rules, so be it.

Just shot over to Noel Leeming, and they have it on their system as mentioned for $1199 - but showing "active" as the status, not "in stock", which means Samsung NZ haven't released them yet - chap there estimated a lead time of 3 - 5 days to get one.

So I'm no further ahead really! Embarassed

Fair enough, well good on you for trying. I dont know why Vodafone doesnt just tell us when it is coming out. I am getting increasingly more likely to buy one off an importer because who knows when VF are going to release them. Its most likely going to be no more than a week at max (People were saying 15th June) but who knows. If they want to make money off seeling these handsets I dont know why they are always so anal about it.

Because they make their $$ off the airtime and calls. Not the handset.
I wonder what the mark up is on handsets?

Impossible to say exactly. Even VF won't know exactly because the selling price markup and the airtime markup all sorta blend together, depending on the plan and the deals offered. The buy price to the carriers, something they won't reveal for commercial reasons, is likely two thirds of their 'standard' handset-only price at minimum - or to put that another way, it's unlikely that VF mark the handset-only price up less than 50% as they have an understandable interest in making their 'subsidised' plan-related handset value look the better option.

It's on record, for instance, that Apple's average selling price for its handsets is US$610, ~$745 Kiwi Pesos, which in turn means that VF, being a rather large customer, will pay less if they're buying globally - more if they're buying regionally.

I assume the latter, which suggests that VF here pay around $825 and re-sell for half as much again - $1240-ish plus GST. I know that's not exact, being inspired guesswork and all, but I think it sorta shows the general percentages we might expect.

In other words, carrier buy prices will likely be 2/3 of the 'regular' handset-only price less GST. Probably.

But hey, I'm no beanie so it could be wrong. I don't think so though.

Cheers,
R2D2

Id rather not import aswell but who knows how long we will be waiting. Some people have said tomorrow/friday, so hopefully it will be then. Others have said next week and I know I can wait that long. Anything after that and I could be buying one from an importer. Who knows, because VF isnt telling us when its coming we might even be waiting 2 months down the track

Has anyone successfully ordered an SGS2 from that Top-10 site?

Popular wisdom is that B&B, NL, JB et al will have stock in the near future, although presumably not a lot with it being shipment #1 and all. It's a week to wait which isn't that long if you're not keen on importing.

Of course, popular wisdom is known for being majorly popular but not always particularly wise. :-)

VF will have stock I hear, but again, how much remains to be seen.

Me, I'll be waiting for the first anniversary of my SGS 1 before I upgrade (promised the missus) so my excitement is firmly parked at present.

I do envy you who are about to pull the trigger though.

Cheers,
R2D2

Rang JB Hifi today, they said they'd have it today or tomorrow, and it would be at a special price, similar to what they did with the Xperia Play - taking a few hundred off the various prices or something similar. Will ring them again later tonight and see whats up!

Keep us posted! I'm a big fan of a "special price" as long as it's handset-only. (Don't want to give VF any more money than I need to!)

Yes, I too am interested with what JB is going to offer! I have held off waiting to buy the device locally than importing one.

Thanks Debin ;)
