Ge0rge: Slightly off topic, but a rough rule of thumb is $1000 per horsepower for a new tractor. $800k would be a big machine, but certainly not uncommon.

It’s a massive quad tracked pivot-steer behemoth. A 9620RX.

RunningMan: This thread is supposed to be about EV news, so people can keep up with new developments. Perhaps move the ICE v EV debate to a new thread?

Agree. There's no new information or news whatsoever in all that back and forth.

Sort of like vegans arguing their case with carnivores 😏 Ingrained opinions with little middle ground.

Ah yes - that's been parked in Masterton for a little while now at the dealers - very impressive! There's certainly no making that electric in the short term...

frankv:

I think the point is that an EV has a lightweight motor (or 2 or 4) instead of a quarter-tonne? of aluminium and steel that's in an ICE and transmission. So, *much* less manufacturing emissions in making that part, although, granted, the rest of the car will be much the same. And, for the EV, you then have add on emissions in mining lithium and manufacturing batteries.

Comparing large EVs against small ICEVs isn't relevant, unless you're expecting small ICEVs to be replaced by a large EVs. If the general size mix of the vehicle fleet remains the same, then EV manufacture will create less emissions than ICEV manufacture. Unless (lithium mining plus battery manufacture) generates more CO2 than (mining bauxite and iron ore plus engine and transmission manufacture).

100% . I don't recall comparing large EVs with small ICE, but yes off course, the ICE is heavier and more complex. The article suggested that the energy to make the batteries is high so an EV costs more emissions to produce. Is that correct or not? It may be, it may be favoured towards the EV, its impossible to know, but its likely close

So lets say its close. If both cars are produced in a coal electricity environment, or hydro, or nuclear, they are equal. As far as production emissions are concerned which is not trivial.

Well EV's are the news due to climate change. Emissions are CC. I think its relevant. If we add subsidies, and/or other benefits thats solely due to climate change. I support EV's, they are the way of the future, but its not a 100-0 scoreline by any stretch.

You laugh, but some of the biggest equipment in the mining sector has long been electrically powered via a tether. As an example:

The replacements will look a little different with different capabilities. Deere's are looking like this:
