DaveB: Why bring Kardashians into what could be a serious political thread? REALLY?

A serious political thread about a mentally unhinged narcissistic reality TV star...

DaveB:

I am of the firm belief that fascism will not ever be allowed to take over as a part of our lives as long as it is not allowed to be shut down as a piece of logical conversation.

Trumpism is working hard to suppress logical conversation by attacking the "lugenpresse" while presenting their own version of the truth presented by the biggest dirty liar of all time as "leader of the free world".  IMO fascism is already part of our lives - fascist concepts are becoming the accepted norm. (hypernationalism, attack on liberal democracy / praise of "strong men", dehumanisation of people seen to be a threat, use of rhetorical ideological hyperbole is everywhere - but particularly used by the right).

Hitler didn't happen overnight - but he did happen.

Here's a *hypothetical:

A couple of days ago "Right Wing Provocateur" Milo Yiannopoulos made the news for his comment:

"I can't wait for vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight"

Should it turn out that a couple of days later, someone with extreme political views (whether or not those views align with those of Yiannopoulos - that's not actually relevant) went and killed a whole bunch of newspaper people, then should Milo's constitutional free speech rights protect him?

I made a private, offhand troll to two hostile reporters, who breathlessly publicized it and like vermin their fellow journalists swarmed to remind the world how much they hate Milo. If the Left was truly horrified by violence against journalists, they would have shown it in the aftermath of Charlie Hebdo. As you all know, they didn’t.

AFAIK this is the law in the USA:

Government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless that speech is "directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action."

Awaiting more information of course, but if this is how it appears, then yep - I'd be locking him up / shutting him down.

The POTUS has sent "thoughts and prayers".

(* - yes I'm aware that I'm "jumping the gun" - there are many possible reasons - other than political - why someone may have a grudge against a newspaper)

I have a grudge against Fox News. I would have a real crisis of conscience if someone with an automatic weapon took out the evil lying scum responsible for its political content. At the same time, I do believe in freedom of thought and speech and I am against the death penalty. Like I say, I would have a crisis of conscience.

Milo Yiannopoulos is horrible, by intention. The rather sad "if you can't get positive attention, get negative," He seems to enjoy abuse.

Since he's an over-the-top homosexual and ultra-right wing nationalist, he's said he is loved and hated by neo-nazis at the same time.

Just a really sad pathetic individual who deserves more pity than derision.

The Guardian - Activists plan to fly a balloon effigy of the US president during his London visit on 13 July.

A group of activists have commissioned a six-metre-high inflatable of the US president to fly over Westminster when he visits ...

It is "fragile, like the president's ego"

He's also not a US citizen.

If he was pushing pro-Muslim or pro-Communist views and also clearly condoning murder of journalists (even if "Oh but it was just a joke") what would happen?

My guess - he'd have his visa cancelled and be put on the first plane back to England.

So he will meet Putin soon. It was a great meeting, we get on really well, its huge! We will break down tariffs on MacDonalds as well. Then he tweets as stated, while Putin rolls over laughing. Nothing will change, except tweets.

Jon Stewart Is Ready To Negotiate With Donald Trump

you can skip to 1:45 for one-one-one message directed from Jon at Trump

"we're all just having trouble adjusting to your presidency as it goes into its five hundredth year.

Everything of its axis. Apparently now Putin and Kim Jung Un are noble and intelligent role models, and Canada are a bunch of giant @ss h_les. That's hard to get used to.

You're redoing the post-war alliances, except this time we're with the Axis powers.

There's one hallmark to your presidency, that we're finding the most difficult: no matter what you do, it comes with extra layer of gleeful cruelty and d_ckishness.

It's not just that you don't want people taking a knee -- It's that there son of b_tches if they do.

It's not just denying women who accuse you of sexual assault -- It's saying they were too ugly anyway.

You can't just be against the media -- There are enemies of the people.

It's not even partisan -- Anyone in the Republican party who speaks against you must also be humiliated, even if they have a terminal disease

Which brings us to emigration. Boy, you f__ked that up.

I apologize ... Sorry ...

It's the seminal example of the Trump doctrine. It's goal best expressed by Arnold Schwarzenegger [in "Conan the Barbarian" 1982 film]:

"What is best in life: Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!"

It's election day in Mexico.

A new president is certain (they only get one term).  There's one leader in the polls by a huge margin, from his policies he's not really looking like he's going to be a great friend for Trump:

Against CIA/FBI "war on drugs".  Apparently Mexico gets US$ 1.5 billion PA assistance.
A soft touch on Mexico's drug cartels - "hugs not drugs".
Against Mexico being responsible for stopping refugees at Mexico's Southern border - who are ultimately heading for the USA.
For using Mexico's 50 consulates in the USA as advocacy centres for immigrants.
Against the wall.
Somewhat of an economic socialist (this would make him an outright communist in America)  His promises are probably unachievable.
He's a social conservative of sorts, catholic of course, also a nationalist and populist.

I don't know if anybody knows how the hell it's going to work, but IMO it's not going to be good.

The US voting system is so complex, it's no wonder voters stay home

The New Zealand Listener, June 30, 2018.

In the United States, turnout in the last mid-terms was 36.4%, the lowest rate for 70 years.

In this round of voting, people who are registered with either the Democrats or the Republicans can vote for the candidates they most want their respective party to field in each contest come the real mid-term elections in November.

... voters are picking candidates for governor, lieutenant [deputy] governor, comptroller, attorney general, one senator and three delegates. Locally, electors are choosing their preferred party’s candidates for the county executive, county council, state attorney, register of wills (like, why?), sheriff, judges of the Sixth Circuit Court, clerk of the Circuit Court, the board of education and the Orwellian-sounding “Party Central Committees”, which, as the name suggests, are elections for local officers of the Democratic and Republican parties.

For every position except the board of education, voters must be registered with either party in order to vote for their candidates.

When you go to vote, you are given only the ballot for the party with which you are registered.

Bloomberg - Trump’s Ineptitude Is No Joke

The administration’s missteps continue unabated.

It’s hard to imagine a better quick story summing up the Donald Trump administration than the one that broke Sunday night about a bill the White House was preparing to, as Jonathan Swan at Axios put it, “declare America’s abandonment of fundamental World Trade Organization rules” by giving the president authority to unilaterally break those rules.

Let’s see …

  • The policy is nuts; virtually all experts, both in trade and in foreign policy, believe global trade is very good for the U.S.
  • In fact, according to Swan’s reporting, almost everyone in the White House thinks the bill “is unrealistic or unworkable.”
  • Why does it exist, then? Because Trump ordered it, and sometimes the best way to mollify a president is to give him what he wants - very slowly, and without anything actually happening.
Apparently this thing has been kicking around for months.
  • The bill has virtually no chance whatsoever of being enacted into law.
  • The draft bill has a title, the United States Fair And Reciprocal Tariff Act, which yields an acronym that had every Twitter wag making fart jokes Sunday night.

So to summarize: The president ordered something inept; he’s not going to get what he wanted; and everyone in the administration has egg on their faces over it.

What’s even more amazing about this is that Trump seems to be oblivious to all of it.

According to the BBC, Cohen may be about to flip. He is quoted in an American TV interview stating that family and country matter more to him than Trump does.
