on2it: > Video calling is hardly a 3G thing.

Funnily enough I've seen mobile offers from Voda account directors stating that they have the "Real 3G" because it offers video calling (and mobile TV).

They must be technically misinformed about their own network, which wouldn't come as a huge suprise.

Of course the real answer is it is the "real 3G" because it is a recognised standard for UMTS (and trade marked by 3GSM I believe) and thats why Telecom had to market their network as T3G..or get sued.  Funny how the "real 3G" is currently running video calling and the T3G version is still waiting?!?!?

May I ask why it "doesn't come as a huge surprise"?  Are you aware of something about Vodafone account directors the rest of us are not? Are they especially technically lacking, or did you feel that throwing that put down into the thread added some value?

I work for Voda, what odds do I get on you being associated with telecom??

Calm down folks.

First 3G is not a trademark. CDMA 2000 is a 3G technology, as WCDMA is a 3G technology. Telecom called theirs T3G as a branding, same ways Vodafone calls SMS "TXT" and MMS "PXT".

As for video calling, folks go read the standard. Signaling is done over packet switched network, when the call is then handled over a circuit switched network.

No one wanted to offend any VFNZ director, and I am sure On2IT wanted to challenge me. Only that.

Now, please back to Telecom New Zealand, which is the current topic. No service comparisons - only Telecom New Zealand new network.

'If you want to hang onto your Pinkilicious handset for a few years you can. If you've been hanging out to get the N91 music phone that Vodafone supports, but like the calling deals on 027, you'll soon have the best of both worlds.'

Well thats a bit silly then the Nokia N91 will not work on the Telecom GSM network as it supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900MHz + WCDMA 2100

How may people are going to fall into that trap?

Telstra has a huge choice of 10 NexG handsets for 850MHz.

Jeez what are you smoking? I know I shouldn't feed the troll but....

CDMA 1xRTT is 3G as ratified by the ITU in 2000. As far as 'real 3G' goes I think you will find that Qualcomm own a lot of the patents for your 'real 3G' and guess what they mainly do CDMA chipsets.

Actually I didn't really even mean to challenge you, but thanks for the comment ;-)

>May I ask why it "doesn't come as a huge surprise"?

I wasn't getting into Voda, but sales in general as I've found their technical understanding is often wanting.

Marketing are even worse. I'm a marketer.

I resent the implication that Marketing is worse than Sales. My powerpoint slides are focused and to the point, and if anyone struggles to turn 3 bullets into technical requirements then they are missing the point.....

I think the choice of phones used is a mute point as the network changeover will be a few years off yet and as we all know phone models change faster than the seasons, telecom obviously have made their intentions clear by announcing WDCMA HSPA and by the time they start selling phone the n91 & pinklisious will be long gone, it seems the phone manufacuters are coming up with greater ideas just wait until all we have is a hearing aid style phone and the screen inbedded in a contact lens then we wont have to worry about what phone we use

Sorry to deviate from the riveting "real 3G" debate but:

Telecom can you please let me buy the old CDMA network when you've finished building out the new GSM one? Then we could finally have a real third player in the market!

My business plan consists of marketing the clapped out old network to boy racers and chicks who are so ignorant that they have to ask their phone what song they're listening to Tongue out

And with no additional information, but coming down the press releases:

PARIS, June 8/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has been selected by Telecom New Zealand as its technology partner for the deployment of a new third-generation (3G) Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA)/High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network deployment.

Subject to a suitable commercial arrangement being reached, Alcatel-Lucent will work with Telecom New Zealand as part of a 168 million Euro (NZ 300 million) mobile network investment plan that will position Telecom to meet New Zealand's future mobile needs.

Telecom's plans include the development of a new W-CDMA/HSPA network that will complement existing CDMA network capabilities and allow Telecom to provide unparalleled mobile services.

Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent's Asia Pacific activities welcomed the announcement as a testament to the strength of Alcatel-Lucent's ongoing relationship with Telecom.

"Today's announcement is a further example of Telecom's commitment to ensuring that its customers have access to the strongest, most flexible set of communications capabilities," Rose said. "With the most comprehensive wireless technology portfolio in the industry, encompassing CDMA/EV-DO, W-CDMA/HSPA, GSM/EDGE and WiMAX, Alcatel-Lucent is the only player positioned to take the best from all technologies, to shape the future and deliver mobile broadband for all."

Its selection as technology partner further highlights the strength of Alcatel-Lucent's wireless communication strategy and portfolio. As a global leader in the development and deployment of third-generation (3G) networks, Alcatel-Lucent has deployed commercial 3G (UMTS/HSPA and CDMA2000) systems for more than 70 operators worldwide.

CDMA 2000 1xRtt EVDO is a 'real' 3G technology, that Telecom has not signalled any intention of closing the network.

PS: *Song was with drawn just before mobile number portability went live.

Running a GSM/UMTS- and a CDMA-network simultaneously is not only financally unbearable, but also technically, as Telecom's frequency spectrum is limited. That may be an interim arrangement, but in the long term - especially regarding the increase of mobile broadband usage - Telecom will definitely shut down the CDMA network and use the released spectrum for GSM/UMTS.
